Tour de San Luis - Stage 3
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0099.jpg

Today the real GC fight starts. The first uphill finish on a hilly circuit. Favourites are obvious. Froome, LLS and Costa all did well in the past on such finishes and might be the biggest names. But many more are not far behind them and could mix it up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0103.jpg

Early on a lot of attacks but no group yet. Sai-Udomsin ahead of Arredondo and Gibbons at the KoM but they weren`t able to create a gap.

Though the high pace on this steep double climb led to a big split in the peloton. ~100 riders are caught behind. Within those:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Betancourt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mehr-Wenige
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Kratochvila
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Augustyn
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Zardini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Hatanaka
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Afonso

Karcher with Paulinho and Porto with Borges are mainly responsible for this selection as they were hammering above the climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0125.jpg

At the 2nd Cat.3 two things happened. First, the dropped puncheurs found their way back into the group and only a group of ~35 riders formed a gruppetto including most sprinters.
And second a "breakaway" formed or better a single rider, who is allowed a gap:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Lane
Behind him Manulang and Der collected the smaller KoM points and clearly showed interest.

Similar on the 3rd KoM where Lane obviously took yet another 6 points and this time it`s Portela and Oba, who attacked from the peloton to grab some as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0138.jpg

For a penultimate time the peloton is passing this point. The next time it`s the finish. For now it`s a good chance to check where to attack.

Ahead Lane and also Portela aren`t that far off. So they can already see them and Arrinera is working for obvious reasons. The steeper it gets though, the more Karcher takes over. Question is if Vogt can really challenge the others today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0144.jpg

One rider though decides for the long range attack with ~40km to go. It`s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Sanchez Gil and he surely is one of the very best due to his TT skills.

Portela was caught before the KoM line and so Paulinho takes the last 2 points while Lane has secured the KoM jersey for tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0157.jpg

After a short descent the 2nd unrated climb saw Lane struggling and dropping back. So it`s LLS in the lead now and he already gained 1min on the 80 rider peloton including hte top puncheurs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0159.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0160.jpg

On this climb another selection and it`s 11 riders in the top group including the very best.
Froome, Costa, Vogt, Bellis or Ben Nasser definitely belong to those while McEvoy, Mudarra, Paulinho, Jans, Roglic or Nepo are surely happy to have made the split.

Behind the likes of UBS Schumacher/Reichenbach, Zaini, Caruso, Palini, Bystrom, Betancourt or the TT-puncheurs Reus, Bibby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0170.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0172.jpg

Just a bit later the high pace sees LLS being caught again, while several helpers such as Paulinho/Jans are dropped. Also Mudarra, Napomnyachsniy couldn`t stay with them while Zaini tries to attack from the 2nd group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0174.jpg

Though it`s another rider, who makes a comeback when the front group slowed down a bit as they are all isolated. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Vastaranta is the 9th rider now in the first group. 1min later a group of 41 trying to also close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0177.jpg

Due to the big work of Bystrom, Caruso and Bibby, this happens with 10km to go. So the top guys did not want to be in the wind too early and prefer saving their energy for the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0180.jpg

3,6km to go and we have started the final climb. Yet again it`s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Sanchez Gil with the first move. He is followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Costa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Froome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0189.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bellis also made it into that elite group.
Behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/afr.png Ben Nasser and surprisingly yet again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Vastaranta with a 28s gap.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kar.png Vogt also proves several critics wrong and shows himself another 21s later, 30s ahead of the next duo pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič/pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nns.png Palini.
The remaining "peloton" is 10s behind those and 1'30 behind the leading group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0194.jpg

What a day for Vastaranta. He must feel huge today as he comes back the 2nd time and he did it alone once again as Ben Nasser wasn`t able to do so.

Further behind Zardini, Prevar, Betancourt and Besada all attacked and try to reduce their loss.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0198.jpg

Final 600m and the steepest part is done. While the top riders look at each other, Vastaranta is ignored and goes into the lead. The flatter finish should suit him again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0200.jpg

LLS, Froome and Bellis next to each other. They were all surprised by that move and have already a gap to the Valio rider.
Costa seems to struggle the most and needs to fight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0202.jpg

But Vastaranta is the rider of the day. Nobody had him on the list today. But he was impressive and wins the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0204.jpg

The gap of 10s to the next group of 4, where Sanchez Gil and Bellis take the bonus seconds is even enough to take over the GC lead! Big day for Valio. Froome and Bellis did gap many riders today, who are better time trialists but it`s not enough as this way they won`t be able to beat LLS and Costa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/SanLuis/mg2016_sanluis_03_PCM0206.jpg

Roglic is another impressive rider today. He moved himself into a great GC position by coming in as 6th 1min down.

This is 21s faster than the next riders: Prevar, Besada, Ben Nasser, Zardini, Betancourt and Vogt.

Then a bigger gap until Palini, Caruso, Visconti and Afonso come in at 2'39, which is still ~1min before the remaining favourites.

So Bystrom, Roy, Schumacher, Reichenbach, Bibby, Reus, Nepo or Zaini within the losers today.

Last but not least an abandon for unknown reasons as no crash was noticed. Meiji`s
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Kuboki abandoned while being a decent rider for such race.
