The Tecos team have hired a new manager for 2008. With no Mexican managers available they looked to Great Britain for a manager. Sam Jackson was announced as the new manager and will try to guide the team to victory this year. |

I heard straight away from the sponsors. They told me they had full confidence in me and would let me have a free reign for most riders and races but had certain goals for the year. They outlined this in a presentation:
They also gave me their budget for the year:
I look to sign some new riders before giving an official presentation of the squad. The team sponsors have also set some boundaries for this. In pre-season I will only be able to sign South and Central American cyclists.
See you around!

I made some big signings since we last spoke. I contracted lots of young talents; in the sprints, on the climbs and one in the time trials. After completing my squad i can now officially release it to you. It looks good for the year
It's a squad bursting with talent that will develop through the oncoming season and I will hope to build on it at the finish of it.
Our first race and my first big sponsor goal is the Tour de San Luis in a week or so's time. We'll be on the lookout for our first win of the year. Let's hope we can get on the scoreboard!

I think I may have been responsible for your season goals, I am not sure I know I had planned on choossing Tecos but may have got busy with the others, and forgot.
They LOOK familiar...damn shame not a single race in Mexico for mi Amigos.
NO DONT THINK IT WAS ME, I HAD BEEN PLANNING ON IT, BUT DONT THINK I DID IT. Ooopsops:

My first race of the year was the Tour de San Luis and my first stage was a time trial. This was thankfully not a baptism of fire as it's just the riders over 3 kilometres of pancake flat time trial. I'm sorry i can't show you the route though, i haven't got my map with me.
I figured with our new time trial talent Arnoldo Alcolea (The Cuban Titan) we could get our sponsors request (a stage win) out of the way.
And it was then I saw the official starting lists.
Cancellara
I knew it would be hard.
Our team for the race was about stage wins and gaining experience, with a shot at the overall.
Gregorio Ladino led the team with mountains help from Fabio Duarte. Jesus Perez would lead us in the sprints, Arnoldo Alcolea in the Prologue and the domestiques were Luis Ortiz and Omar Cervantes.
It was not looking good when our first rider went off with Cancellara in a 15 second lead. Our riders just couldn't perform and Arnoldo only managed 12th. However, he is only a second down in the young riders classification so it's not too bad.
The person who got closest to Cancellara was a former dopist, which really annoyed me, Sergui Gonchar. He was within a second but just didn't have it in him to win.
The results were as follows:
Rank Name Team Time
1 Fabian Cancellara Team CSC 5'24

Tomorrow is a flat stage and CSC remain the danger team with a very strong squad containing Cancellara, Breschel, Cuesta, Van Goolen, Lund and Gustov. I will hope to do something with Perez.
I will update you tomorrow evening but tonight i will enjoy my first 2 star hotel of pro cycling.
That's what it's all about |

A more promising day. A flat stage which suited Perez but again when i surveyed the favourites we were looking like a top 10 would be the best we could muster.
With only one mountain points on offer today I thought we could steal the jersey but i made Ortis wait too long.
The break went off on the climb and the best of them wouldn't be seen for 140km.
They were brought in with 7k to go and I thought we could catch the favourites out and I told Arnoldo to go for it!
He attacked strongly but the leadouts were going too fast and with 3k to go the sprint started with Arnoldo in the lead and Jesus, who said he was on the best ride of his life, relatively well positioned.
Garrido kicked on and overtook Arnoldo with Jesus in 4th wheel.
Jesus tried to go on the outside but flicked his foot out the pedals and momentarily lost momentum. This gave him no chance of the victory and Garrido looked to have it wrapped up. Jesus just got edged out for second on the line.
A podium put a big smile on Jesus's face and I felt satisfied. Arnoldo was unlucky to get only 14th.

Arnoldo moves into 10th on GC and Jesus is 3rd on points.
Tomorrows hilly stage could make a real effect. I have some tricks up my sleeve and I think we could step up to that top step of the podium very soon.
Close but no cigar!

Same again.
A good result but not the victory we wanted.
The influential hilly stage could make big dents in the overall. We were'nt even thought of as in with a chance for a top 10. That helps put a gloss on the results, especially with the likes of former Giro winner Gilberto Simoni and Cancellara in the field.
The profile looked like this:
I sent Omar Cervantes on the attack from the start with the objective of taking the mountains jersey. He took 3rd over the first climb and then the break grouped together.
He took 1st over the second climb before being swallowed up by the group.
With 5k to go Jurgen Van Goolen of CSC attack and Ladino and 3 others followed.
At the finish we were annoyingly deprived of the stage win after Gregorio messed up his sprint, starting and finishing last in the group.
But we take 5th on the stage to add to a 3rd and it's not looking that bad. We also hold 5th on GC.
Omar, on an even brighter note, is leading the mountains competition by 2 points and I hope he can consolidate it on the next road stage.
I hope Greg can improve his positioning and possibly take a stage win in tommorows mountain TT.
On the upside we have a 3 star hotel tonight.Ooh the luxury!!! |

Not a good day.
The mountain TT dawned.
The riders went about with the usual gusto but when Ortiz finished dead last I knew I'd screwed up the strategy.
I'm too dissapointed to report much. Arnoldo and Greg got top 20s but that was about it.

Greg got pushed down into 6th by Cancellara . But at least Arnoldo leads the U25's competition and has moved up to 10th.
At least it's not all bad. |

The penultimate stage had a pcm crash and simulated itself without any changes.
Our final stage.
My final chance to fulfil our sponsors goal.
I would cover every option. Cervantes with the breakaway, Ladino with a late attack and Perez in the sprint.
The parcours looked like this:
Cervantes attacked and joined the break.
He took 1st over both KOMs to secure the jersey.
Then Greg made his move, a ferocious attack over a small hill.
But the pack pulled him in on the descent
Perez got himself in a good position among the better sprinters and looked sharp.
He started to go on the outside. Did he have the firepower for a great debut win.
NO!
To my dismay I realised the sprint had started too late! He wasn't going to claim that sponsor pleasing win.
The honours went to Fabio Sacchi but second and a previous third show lots of promise for Perez.
We ended up taking home the mountains and young riders jerseys as well as 6th and 10th on GC. We also grabbed 2 podiums and 3 top 5s and 4th on points. So not bad but could be better.

This could be our biggest race of the year and the line-up reflected that, containing more big name stars than some recent TDFs.
We brought Gil Cordoves for the sprints, Greg for the mountains and Arnold for the TTs. The rest: Bernardo Colex, Carlos Oyarzun, Rodolfo Fernandez, Luis Alfredo Guiterrez and Freddy Piamonte are here for the experience.
The opening prologue looked like we had no chance. When an in-form Lazlo Bodrogi is considered the worst of people just in with a chance you know it's gonna be tough.
But Arnoldo really showed his talent, finishing joint 5th only behind Cancellara, Zabriskie, Rosseler and Wiggins and also nabbing the young riders jersey.
He finished ahead of Michael Rogers, Vladimir Gusev and George Hincapie. He finished half a minute ahead of Stef Clement, world time trial championship bronze medallist, in this, just a 3km TT. He finished nearly 40 secs ahead of Lazlo Bodrogi and Jens Voigt.
This is a great start for the lad, but getting more top 10 results from any of the team looks to be almost wishful thinking. With Hushovd, Freire, Cavendish too name but a few in the sprints, Rogers, Hincapie, Bettini, Frank Schleck, Voigt, Kroon and Horner to dominate the hills and mountains it's going to be anything but easy. But we can get some good results from this race. I'm sure of that.
Todays stage was won by David Zabriskie in a time of 5'16 at an average speed of 43.2911 km/h or 26.8998 (not amazingly fast). It's significant to point out that last place was 1'03 down at an average speed of only 36.0949 km/h or 22.4283 mp/h. That could be achieved by most amateur racers!
(This also shows cyanide's terrible unrealism as the real race was covered at 59.2207km/h with the last placed rider riding at 49.7454km/h(faster than the winner ingame))

A beautiful day today. I woke early to bright sunshine streaming in through my hotel window. It was 26 Centigrade outside; and this is February. Meanwhile in New York it's -12.
Todays stage included a tough hill 40km from the finish that could put lots of favourites into trouble.
The early break went away as usual.
It was caught on the climb and Ladino attacked over the top.
He went solo before being caught 8km from the finish. Just as he was caught I screamed down the earpiece at Oyarzun to attack and boy did he attack.
He soloed away from the group and begin his sprint early.
Fernandez was well set up in the group and was sprinter as Cordoves was in the back of the group after the climb. He sat in World Champion Paolo Bettini's wheel.
Hushovd jumped on the right and Fernandez began to follow. Would our man Oyarzun be caught?
And the answer is...................... NO!!!
Our first win of the year and 3rd on podium as well. We were over the moon especially Carlos. He now sits second on GC while Arnoldo still has the young riders jersey.
I can't wait for tommorow

A stage with 2 early hills that then flattened out. We thought it would make no difference. We were very nearly ever so wrong.
We sent Freddy Piamonte into the break.
He took second on both mountain climbs behind Sergui Ivanov. They were hauled back in and, because it had worked yesterday, I sent Oyarzun on the attack.
A group of sprinters bridged up as well as our team leader Greg to form a lead group of 9.
At the back lots of people came down in crashes, including leader Zabriskie and our sprinter Cordoves. At the finish Hushovd sprinted to the win and the points jersey while we took 8th and 9th.
We thought we had nicked yellow but alas, a terrible mistake from the timekeepers. Despite an evident split at the finish no time gap was given.
So Zabriskie lives to fight another day. But tommorow is the mountain stage. Can we take the win?

What a day!
A mid-mountain stage that should really shake up the classification and would need a really good tactical head. A chance to put my skills to the test.
The race looked like this:
The predictable early break went today but looked strong.
Halfway through the stage a group attacked and Arnoldo went with them.
They soon bridged up to the breakaway.
On the final climb Greg and Carlos attacked.
Just before the flat Arnoldo attacked for the stage win.
He blew the race apart to take the stage and the GC lead!!
The stage finished:

Arnoldo has the young riders jersey as wel and Freddy Piamonte is second.
Tommorows tricky hilly stage is crucial as I can't afford to let Arnoldo lose time to second-placed Cancellara before the important TT. |
