The 4th stage is the first hilly one and after yesterdays huge ride by Amador, he is the one to defend.

You might know this profile. It`s basically yesterdays mountain stage going into other direction back to the start again.

Roche is the biggest puncheur in the race. Ricco, Cunego are well known though to be excellent riders on short climbs. So those 3 are ahead of the next but in fact all the GC guys are high up there in the favourite list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0160.jpg

No one really wanted to attack on the tough downhill. So it had to wait until 100km to go on the flat bit for a proper attack. It`s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Atapuma, who was unlucky yesterday being far off in the GC now. He is joined by young pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ioc.png Hirt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0164.jpg

Santaromita and Frei are excellent worker at the front. Behind them the big men already: Ricco, Amador, Cunego, Berhane (with Teklehaimanot), Pinot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0172.jpg

Just behind this first Cat.2 the duo were caught again.
So it`s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/npn.png Rodrigues taking the next mountain sprint after he just attacked with some KoM riders behind:
Cat.2
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/npn.png Rodrigues10
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wha.png Mai8
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Herrada6

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Iino2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0177.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/npn.png Rodrigues and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/eus.png Herrada stay in front having a small gap. Their GC is 20th and 22nd with 5'56 each. So not the biggest danger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0180.jpg

Though on the 3rd climb Herrada is too strong as he gets rid of Rodrigues taking the big points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0183.jpg

Behind those two it`s the peloton going over the line with just a 1min gap.
A group of 25 riders now has created a gap when Ricco/Cunego did the pace over the top.

Surprisingly it`s the puncheurs being left behind. Roche, Slagter, Preidler all weren`t concentrated. Neither was Kiserlovski or Anacona.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0203.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0205.jpg

So pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche now has to attack from the later field but is able to make it into the GC group. Though several behind do it with less energy and it`s up to 42 riders on the last climb. All the previously mentioned but Anacona made it back! Eritel with several options as next to Berhane and Teklehaimanot, who were in group 1 anyway, Teklit and also fast man Impey are back. Sprinter wise only Modolo is also in there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0217.jpg

And several of those, that just made it back, are now attacking with 3km to the top! Herrada is caught. So it`s all about the new attackers.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Slagter
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/sva.png Vanendert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wha.png Preidler
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Chamorro

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0221.jpg

A bit later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche. Except of Vanendert, they all get a small gap. 27 behind in the peloton as some riders got dropped once more such as Rodrigues or Teklit and Impey. So Eritel`s opportunities became less again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0224.jpg

Also bad news for Meiji. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Ji is dropped! The 4th in the GC has problems. Sure, his strength are the longer climbs, but neither does he belong to the very bad puncheurs and so it`s still quite surprising. Apparently yesterdays long effort did cost him too much energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0226.jpg

Seeing the chance to improve in the GC, home rider pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ers.png Berhane immediately attacks. As 7th in the GC he still has good chances. Just behind him the 5th: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Brenes.

Over the top Roche and Preidler are first. Then 12s later Chamorro and with the same gap Slagter.
Then at 44s in total Berhane and Brenes just seconds ahead of the 24 rider peloton.

Ji already having 1min!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0232.jpg

Chamorro with a huge descent. He almost joins the duo in front. Meanwhile Berhane/Brenes are caught again and also Slagter is just a bit ahead of the field.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0234.jpg

Ayubowan still planning something. Pinot with some kind of leadout for Yates. Then Lövkvist who is keeping the pace high when passing Slagter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0238.jpg

Roche in first position followed by Preidler and Chamorro! Those 3 might decide the stage as it`s still 42s.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0240.jpg

Under the Flamme Rouge, Roche accelerates and immediately has a gap.
From behind the first riders are reducing the gap clearly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0243.jpg

It`s still Pinot, who is doing some huge leadout for Yates. Lövkvist tries to join them and they have a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0245.jpg

But too late for the stage win. Roche as best puncheur wins the hilly stage. Behind him Preidler and Chamorro with a strong performance, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0247.jpg

Yates as 4th ahead of Lövkvist is not too happy. This was his chance to win a stage, but the trio was stronger.
Pinot as 6th though gave everything and at least he was able to close the gap! So all counted s.t., which is good for Ayubowan, as this means, they still have good chances to get the U25 shirt. 16s only to Chamorro and those 2 are the only realistic contesters as Meintjes as +2'22 is quite a bit behind already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0249.jpg

Totally on his own, Ji lost and lost towards the end. 2'40 later he passes the line, which sees him dropping a lot. Down to 14th.

And last but not least a late abandon as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cpl.png Kozontchuk decides to quit the race.
