According to Rai sport Basso has signed a contract with Liquigas starting from 24th october. Doesn't the Protour teams have an agreement that says convicted riders can't be signed until two years after their ban is over? |

there's a news thread for a reason
and it's been posted there already.
On one hand, it's Liquigas, so it's perfectly possible that they've signed him
On the other hand, it's RAI, so it's perfectly possible that it's all made up.
Frankly, I don't really care much. he's going to come back with an italian team and it doesn't make much difference to me what team it ends up being.

Maybe Liquigas, and many other teams, will quit the Protour after this year?
I don't think many teams want to go to Russia |

Ban given by the CONI. Not any relationship to the UCI.

I think this news article deserves its own thread.
Anyway, will be interesting to see if he's just as "good" as back then... |

Yeah, I agree, although he is a doper I think that he what happened was he was a great rider naturally, and reached the head of CSC on his own natural abilites, but he realized that he would never beat Lance without doping, and with Riis's pushing took steroids. I think that if he is now clean, he can still be a great rider (he is only 32-33 is he not) |

So you're saying he wasn't doped before his CSC-years? |

No, I think he started doping once he reached CSC. I think many riders have done that, reached the ProTour or the top level of teams on their own merits, and had to dope to keep-up with the other riders, who were doping as well.
Note: This does mean I think pretty much all of the ProTour riders dope

Well he had a top 10 gc finish in the tour with Fassa Bortolo so maybe he just got better dope with CSC?

In the universe that forgives riders who fulfilled their bans and are able to ride freely again, with no further responsibility. "Non bis in idem". Once two years are gone, everyone's allowed to ride. No matter who you are. |

I'd love to believe that, but considering that most are caught again, I'm not so sure.

If they're caught again, they¡re given a ban for life. Can you show me a list of riders who were banned that way over the last few years? |

Since when are they given a ban for life?
There are several cases of riders who were suspended for doping and came back only to dope again. Since a positive test is so rare, it's not like they tested positive again, but they either confessed or were nailed to the wall with evidence.

Ok. No list of twice banned riders. Then we can discuss about Basso joining Liquigas again... |

Sure, let's agree to disagree.
mark my words: Basso won't be another Santiago Perez, he'll come right back to the level of performance he was at before his ban.
But I guess we'll see at the Giro next year.

No, I think he would have been able to get a 3rd on his own merits, but he realized he wouldn't beat either Ullrich or Armstrong without doping. |
