As first of the 2 hilly stages, the popular Corkscrew climb close to the end and a descent finish.
While the top puncheurs are favoured today, the fast men are a potential threat if they make it over the top within a group.
4 riders in the break and surprisingly one of Spotify. Instead of working in the peloton for race leader Reimer, the team apparently decides to go the easy way and giving the work to others. Surely not the friendliest way.
Ludvigsson
Armee
Delgerbayar
Bulgarelli
Sprint Armee6 Ludvigsson4 Delgerbayar2
Wiesenhof, Karcher, Vontobel and Generali the main teams to chase. Spotify not only annoying them by not doing their duties but also always have one rider in the chasing train to disturb them. The others are not happy at all.
Karcher have Salerno (5th in GC) as worker today. So the situation remains the same. Vogt/McEvoy are their leaders with Paulinho also a step above the Italian.
2nd sprint and Bulgarelli by now already caught as he was the weakest of them.
Sprint Armee6 Delgerbayar4 Ludvigsson2
Easy to spot, which teams have plans for today. Flügel, Di Maggio and Vogt/McEvoy send their tams to the front. 35km and 2'10 gap.
One after the others gets caugh. First Delgerbayer, then Ludvigsson and as last it`s Armee still fighting. But no chance for him neither as he is back with 15km to go.
Two riders decide to attack already in the descent towards Corkscrew Climb. It`s
McCarthy and Ulissi. Two of the top puncheurs.
Though mainly Wiesenhof with Preidler as power horse is chasing them. All the top guys in the first rows just behind.
So the duo is caught just when the uphill starts. Who goes next?
It`s last years winner Di Maggio who is followed by home rider McCarthy, who seems to be motivated.
Ulissi, Kump, Vanendert, Cort Nielsen, McEvoy, Reimer, Froome, Flügel, Preidler, Gautier, Vogt, Paulinho and all the others behind them.
On top a group of 25 riders pass the KoM and no one really was able to create a gap.
Cat.1 McEvoy16 Di Maggio12 Ulissi10 McCarthy8 Paulinho6 Kump4 Froome2
A quick look on the 2nd group and some notable names there.
Craven
Zaini
Reichenbach
Fumeaux
Landa
Mendes
Dieteren
Pozzato
Barrio
Roy
Three riders successfully close the gap though as Craven and Zaini as also his team mate Uchima attacked from the 2nd group with 5km to go.
Though some splits opened just afterwards and the three riders alongside couple more lost contact.
It`s now 19 riders in front including most favourites. The 2nd group of 9 has Gautier and Gilbert as biggest names.
10 riders try to chase them including the UBS and Ferrero riders (but Barbin, who is in the favourite group!).
Also Impey is in this third group, which though can`t really create a gap to the big field behind.
Di Maggio paceing down the descent. Kump sitting just behind him in the perfect position for his first stage win of the year. McEvoy and Reimer though as other hilly sprinters though aren`t far behind neither. Also Betancourt and Caruso in the front rows.
Already on the final kilometer when it`s slowly being less steep, though still going downhill. Di Maggio in the lead with Kump coming around him quickly. Though Caruso, Betancourt and McEvoy just as fast.
Reimer`s position was not as ideal and he struggles to fight for more bonus seconds.
Kump on the right can`t go as fast as expected as he clearly was spending some energy to stay in this group, while McEvoy is trying to find a gap through the middle.
Surprising winner in a close sprint. Caruso somehow is able to beat the others and also Betancourt in 2nd was not really expected. Kump in 3rd only surely had hoped for better. His bonus seconds though will at least give him the leader shirt being s.t. with Caruso and Reimer now.
The other GC riders surely are happy to see the bonus seconds being shared instead of going to the same riders on each stage.
Zaini leads the 2nd group over the line. 55s loss for them, which might be the end of high GC chances for Gilbert, Craven, Gautier, Zaini as biggest names.
The "peloton" of about 80 riders lost 1'22. In there Impey, Landa, Reichenbach, Pozzato and more.
