The 191 riders on the starting line of the Badaling International have to be in a great shape if they want to win the first PT race of the 2016 season. All the punchers are here :
Hagen
Bakelants
Ponzi
Trofimov
Ginanni
Skujins
and a lot of other outsiders are willing to take the win under the Great Wall.
It was easy to predict that it would be difficult to be at the front today, Thomson and Grygorenko can confirm this as they weren't able to catch the good breakaway :
Flens
Abreu
Kohl
Skjerping
There's really nothing to say until the riders reached Badaling for the final circuit of the race. As we approach the finish line, 9 riders are victim of a fall, and Castroviejo is too injured to continue. The 8 other guys will be able to come back quickly. There's still 150 kilometers to ride.
The peloton has to go through a tunnel, and some riders weren't aware of that. So an other fall happens ! Here's a GoPro footage of Bazhkou flying over his bike.
A rider just stopped after this incident, and as we check, it's Kelderman ! The dutchman is forced to retire too, with still 135 kilometers remaining.
We're not far from a fall overdose : A few laps later, in the same tunnel, 4 cyclists hit the ground :
Hamza
Albert
Vink
Oelerich
Meanwhile, the pack is finally starting chasing seriously : 90 km to go, 5'45'' gap for the breakaway.
Bouygues Telecom and Aker are monopolizing the chase, and it's really efficient : 50 km, 2'40''.
There's no agreement anymore in the breakaway, Flens attacks, but his opponents are in his wheel.
10 kilometers after, the breakaway is finally over after a final attack of Abreu. We passed the 20 kilometers arch, and the peloton is still compact with « only » 30 riders dropped.
We have to wait until the last kilometer of the last climb to see an attack from favourites. It's launched by Bakelants, with Ponzi, Hagen and Ginanni behind him.
This quatuor quickly built a gap of 35 seconds, but 3 outsiders are chasing now at a very high pace :
Van Garderen
Skujins
Gastauer
7 kilometers left, the pack is not that far either.
Perfect cooperation between the 4 guys at the front, so Van Garderen is trying to bridge the gap in solo with 5 kilometers to go.
Van Garderen can take advantage of his rivals watching each other !
The american wasn't able to come back before the sprint, launched strongly by Ginanni. The line is at 700 meters.
400 meters further, no one seem able to catch the italian ! Van Garderen is trying to go up on the left side of the road.
Francesco Ginanni is the winner of Badaling International ! He was clearly the best today on the chinese roads. Jan Bakelants takes the second place, just before Tejay Van Garderen who made a stunning sprint. Only 5th position for Hagen, who crosses the line behind Ponzi.
6th place for Ben Gastauer, in front of Skujins.
The peloton's sprint is dominated by Puma riders, without their fallen leader Kelderman : Mager 8th, Felline 9th, Bongiorno 10th and Herklotz 12th. It was clearly a disappointing race for other leaders, who can't reach the top 10 today, like last year's winner Trofimov.
