Today the 8 best riders from every continental championship are going to team up and a team from every continent is going to compete with the others for the the title of the Intercontinental Team Time Trial Champion.
Team Africa is the first team on the road today. 4th team of the last year's ICC TTT are looking to be serious challengers for a medal this time.
Europe is the second team to leave the starting line. The clear favourites. Anything else than gold medal would be a real disappointment.
America is the next team to give it their best today on 47.2km long route. Possibly the biggest challenger to take away gold medals from European boys.
The team of the hosting continent is Asia. They may be the last team on the start today. But these guys are hopeful they won't be the last team in standings when everything is done today!
African team is setting the benchmark in the first check today: 23'12"
Team Europe is expectedly absolutely smashing the leading time. 22'24" and 48 second lead.
Americans are somewhere in-between. 20 second back on Europe, 28 second advantage over Africa in the first time checkpoint.
The last team coming through the first chrono is Team Asia. 23'01" and the third place.
The standings after the first intermediate time:
1
Europe
22'24"
3
America
+ 20
3
Asia
+ 37
4
Africa
+ 48
European riders are clearly confirming so far they are the biggest favourites today, with Americans the likely favourite for the second place.
Second time check now. Team Africa is going through strong with all 8 riders. 43'58" is the time set to compare with all other teams.
I wrote Africans are going strong? Well maybe they are, but Team Europe is still going in a way faster pace and as they have almost one and half minute lead over Africa with stopping the time check on 42'33". And they alredy can see backs of African riders from quite a close distance.
43'02" for Team America. Medal seems to be in bag now, but gold medal seems to be long ways from the 'New World' continent.
Only 7 Asian riders coming through the last intermediate time as Bahihammad could not keep up with the pace of other riders. But what a surprising time it is for them - 42'54"! Between the first and the second time check Team Asia were going 16 seconds faster than Europeans and are currently the 2nd fastest team on the road!
The standings after the second intermediate time:
1
Europe
42'33"
2
Asia
+ 21
3
America
+ 29
4
Africa
+ 1'24
Medal holders may be already decided, but if Asian riders can keep the current pace, it can even be a really close duel for the 1st place!
However the first team is already in the last few hundred meters...
Team Africa was the team to start this time trial and is the first team in the finish as well, but if we look a little bit behind them, it clearly looks like their time isn't going to be the best in this race. Africans stop the clock with time of 59'37". In the last few kms the rider pulling the most for Africans was Hussein as Ahmed Arrissol couldn't keep up the pace with his 7 remaining team mates.
Europeans are then absolutely smashing the time set by Africans! 57'44" and almost 2 minutes advantage over Africa! Even Europe couldn't finish with all 8 riders today as the legendary Spartacus Fabian Cancellara was the rider not finishing with him team mates. Will this time be enough to win the race?
Only group of 5 riders finishing for the team from America! Especially Taylor Phinney gave it all he had in his tank and has dropped his mates Bookwalter, Úran and Munoz in the process, but the effort wasn't enough today to beat Euro team. 58'34" and a provisional second place.
Only one team remaining on the road now. The main question - could the hosting continent keep the pace from the middle part of the race all the way to the finish line?
No! Kwok, Sergent, Howson, Durbridge and Atkins were the 5 riders to finish the race together for Asia, but their pace faded away a little bit. Time 58'28 means they are 44 seconds away from the gold medals, but on the other way it is 6 seconds adavantage over American riders.
So that means Gold medals are going to Europe, Silver medals are for Asia and Team America is all from bronze today!
