The Euro B Champs will deliver some smaller nations the chance to ride for a win! The top 4 riders will also be rewarded with the honor of riding Intercontinental Championship Road Race. We are 'enjoying' a really windy day here in Doha, Qatar so some echelons could be a real possibility!
After a slow start, the peloton has easily allowed two riders to ride away - these two are Forcellini and Durasek.
With 150km to the finish, Donald Mukaj has crashed and sadly abandoned from the race.
120km to go. The breakaway now has 8min on the peloton - Belarus (Koshevoy, Sakalou, Siutsou, Klimiankou) and Israel (Burlutsky, Goldstein, Eliad) are the main nation to lead the chase, riders from Finland (Kulppi, Paajanen), Hungary (Kusztor) and Azerbaijan (Jabrayilov) are helping with the pace as well.
60km to go. Nothing special is really happening so far - the peloton is slowly decreasing the lead of the two leading riders - their advantage is now 3min.
42km to go. And we finally have an action! Popstefanov has decided to try his luck and attacked from the peloton! He quickly opens up 24s gap, but peloton reels him back in really quickly by a fast movement from team Estonia.
39km to go. Another attack! This time M.Velits and Omarsson, they are able to create 32s gap.
Because of a fast pace and real windy conditions, we have first riders dropped from the peloton! Biggest name behind is Omelchenko!
34km to go. A big split in the peloton! 100 riders (!) are not able to keep up with the fast pace of Belarus and Finland that are pacing the peloton and a big gap appears! The biggest names catched up at the back are:
Szalontay
Lovassy
Kiserlovski
Vastaranta
Omarsson
Papok
30km to go. M.Velits and Omarsson are chased down by the peloton as well as the original breakaway Durasek and Forcellini. The peloton now has only 81 riders and a lot of riders are fighting for not being blowed away by a really strong wind!
24km to go. Still mainly the same nations are driving a really fast pace - namely Kulppi, Margaliot, Pökälä, Samoilev, Asadov and Siutsou. That means that riders like Borisavljevic and Hasta are now behind the main field. A lot of other helpers are now really struggling to keep with the pace of the race as well!
Slovakian riders are then taking over the pacing of the peloton, however...
10km to go. Big things are happening! Group of 16 riders is just riding away from the peloton that has now only 50 riders! These riders in the front of the peloton with a small gap are:
P.Velits
Sambris
Sipos
Kal
Tybor
Frommelt
Taaramäe
J.Sagan
Cohen
Nurmi
Kangert
Rinner
Tanovitchii
Yzeiraj
Varga
Pluchkin
Can the other riders in the peloton close the gap? It may be really hard in such a strong wind we have here in Doha!
9km to go. No, they clearly can't and a big split has happened! All the biggest favourites with the exception of Cohen have missed this split!
The race situation with 8km to the finish line is:
Mandri
Chasing group +33s
Peloton +32s
The peloton is now 2min behind the leading rider and any real chase has stopped there! It looks like the winner of the race is going to be either Mandri or any of 12 riders from the chasing group!
3km to go. While Mandri has 38s on the chasing group, another two riders are now dropped from that group! These two riders are Yzeiraj (ALB) and P.Velits.
1km to go for the chasing group now as well! Kal, Cohen, Taaramäe, Rinner and Pluchkin are able to drop Varga, Kangert and Tanovitchii and even more far down the road are Sambris, Tybor and J.Sagan!
Cohen should be the favourite from this group as he is clearly the best sprinter on the paper.
40s behind finishes the chasing group. And it is Rein Taaramae who surprisingly takes the silver medal and makes the race 1-2 for Estonia! Cohen has started his sprint too soon and in the end he is even outsprinted by way worse sprinters than he is! Mirac Kal can celebrate a surprising 3rd place and takes the bronze medal for Turkey! Noam Cohen finishes only 4th, but at least secures a place in the Intercontinental Championships Road Race.
Behind finishes Aleksandar Pluchkin and Daniel Rinner. Estonia's triump is then even bigger as Tanel Kangert finishes 7th. Varga, Tanovitchii and Sambris are then the remaining riders in the top 10.
A few late attacks are successful from the peloton which completely gives up all the chasing. The peloton comes home only 4min after Mandri and the sprint there wins Carsi.
