Team High Road 2008

The team is set up for an extremely successful season. It's got a nice mix of classics riders, mountain men and sprinters and should be very successful in a wide range of areas. As you can see below, we have dropped a few riders and added some young talent, to ensure this team is set up to go forward into the future.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/team.jpg

Sponsor Goals:

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/TeamGoal.jpg

To be honest, these goals don't look all that daunting. We'll have to gear up quickly for the Tour of California, but with this team the whole list shouldn't be too big a problem.

The team leaders:

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/GeorgeProg.jpg

Big George will be focusing on the cobbled classics in the spring and then gear up for the Tour de France. I'll probably race him in the Tour of California as well as a warm up for March and April. I probably won't rely on him for the win though.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/BernProg.jpg

Eisel is kind of a "poor man's Tom Boonen"... a good sprinter and good in the Northern Classics as well. We'll likely be using him as more of a support rider for Hincappie in the classics, instead focusing on a green jersey in the Giro, and if he holds up in the Vuelta as well.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/KimProg.jpg

Kirchen is our best climber... both in the hills and the mountains. To be honest I'd rather race him in the Giro if I had my way, but we're going to let him have his way and put him in the Tour. I haven't decided if I can trust him to get a top 10 or not there... he's not strong in the time trials. I may need to throw Gerdeman in there as a back up.

The plan right now is for Rogers to take the lead in the Giro, Kirchen to lead the Tour and Gerdeman to lead the Vuelta. As always... things may changes.

To wrap up we'll take a brief look at the team finances. We've gotten three top sponsors in Amstel, Adidas and Bayer and we've locked them up long term. With the generous sponsor investment, money should not be an issue and we should have plenty to spend when transfers come around.

Jayco Bay Cycling Classic

The first race of the year, this short sprinter tour is extremely dangerous. There are lots of twists and turns along narrow roads, and crashes will likely be common.

Team High Road has decided to take part mainly as a warm up for some important races early in the season. Michael Rogers is competing to get ready for the Australian Championships. He's hoping to earn that ugly green and yellow jersey this season. Gerald Ciolek is taking part to get ready for the Tour Down Under, where we hope to get some pro-tour points early in the year.

The team:
Michael Rogers - Team Leader
Gerald Ciolek - Sprinter
Marcel Sieberg - Teammate/Leadout man
Adam Hansen - Teammate
John Devine - Teammate

Stage 1 is very short and flat, but travels along narrow roads with many sharp turns.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-1pro.jpg

There wasn't enough time for any break to do anything as the pelaton was chasing from the get go. It came down to a mass sprint which we felt good about, but Rene Hasselbacher simply pulled away from Ciolek down the stretch.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-1a.jpg

At the back of the pelaton, the team had a very unlucky event. Just before the finish Jurgen Van Goolen crashed... and took Michael Rogers down crossing the finish. Rogers skidded across the finish line on his hip... finishing with the Pelaton but getting banged up pretty good in the process. Let's hope he can recover over the next few days and be ready for the Australian Championships.

Jayco Bay Cycling Classic - Stage 2

Another short flat stage. There are some extremely slight inclines, and there aren't barriers along the whole route like there were in the first stage, but it should still be a wild stage.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-2pro.jpg

The pace was high from the beginning of the race again, and Rogers was obviously suffering from his fall yesterday. He wasn't able to keep up. Hansen and Devine were sent back to try to help him stay connected to the pelaton when the sprint positioning started, but to no avail.

In the end, Hasselbacher and Huff blew by Ciolek in the final sprint, for another disappointing finish. Sieberg took Ciolek's wheel after leading him out to take 4th, a nice finish for him.

Jayco Bay Cycling Classic - Stage 3

A bit longer stage, this one is pancake flat and should hopefully set Ciolek up for a win. He's been disappointing in the last two sprints... he really should be dominating this field.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-3pro.jpg

There are a lot of twists and turns in this circuit but for most of the race everyone makes it through unscathed. Then, with the sprinters jockeying at the front a huge crash occurs with less than 5 km (one lap) to go!

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-3a.jpg

Wave after wave of riders hit the pavement as they come around the turn and hit the riders down on the ground. The road is so narrow it's virtually impossible to avoid the pile up. Less than half of the 65 man field makes it through the wreck. ALL of High Road's riders are caught up in it.

The sprint was thrown into chaos by the crash as well, but Sebastian Hinault had the presence of mind to surge to the front at just the right time and hold on for the win.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-3b.jpg

In the end, Ciolek was the only High Road rider to escape injury of some kind. All of the riders will be able to continue the race, but stage 4 looks to be a strugge. Any chance at an overall or points win has disappeared.

Jayco Bay Cycling Classic - Stage 4

Forgot to click the replay on this, so no screenies.

Stage 4 is the longest stage of the race, but still fairly short at under 90 km. It's mostly flat, but there is an incline that gets up to about 2% in each circuit.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-4pro.jpg

Ciolek looked fairly well positioned going into the sprint, but made his move too early considering the incline. Ciolek was ahead with 1.3 km to go when he made his move... but he ran out of gas and got passed by a charging group led by Rory Sutherland.

Rogers again fell off when the sprint began. This whole idea of racing here to get in form is looking to be a bad choice at the moment.

Jayco Bay Cycling Classic - Stage 5

The final stage of the race... and it can't come soon enough. It's been a disaster so far. The stage is blessedly short, so perhaps Team High Road can finish without kissing any pavement.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/1-5pro.jpg

Ciolek moved right up to the front at the start, then got a great leadout from Sieberg and powered away from the Pelaton for the win in dominating fashion. Sieberg was strong enough to hold on for third. FINALLY! This is what we expected from this tour.

Australian Championships - Individual Time Trial

It's time to see how our plan with Rogers pays off. He's got some race days under his belt which could help... but he's also hit the pavement twice this year.

The day is hot and the course actually has some hills to it, so it should be an interesting contest. Rogers and Cadel Evans are definitely the favorites.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2-1pro.jpg

In the end, it was really just a race between those two. And even that wasn't too close... Rogers was clearly in superior form coming in and it showed during the races.

Congrats to Micheal Rogers... Australian Time Trial champion for 2008! Also, congrats to Adam Hansen, High Road's other Auzzie, who made a fine ride to finish just off the podium in 4th.

Australian Championships - Road Race

This hilly circuit is a great profile for Rogers, and he's tagged as the favorite for the race. It will be tough considering he's only got Hansent to help him through rather than a whole team.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2-2pro.jpg

Hansen tried to get into an early break, but it was pulled back by the pelaton fairly quickly. Another break formed with no real strong riders and stayed away for a bit, but was pulled back with over a third of the race left.

Then the favorites attacked, and both Hansen and Rogers followed. An elite break formed with the likes of Evans, McGee, Lowe, Ford, Gerrans and Cooke along with the two High Road riders. It's clear the winner would come from this break.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2-2a.jpg

Hansen worked hard, pushing the pace at the front while Rogers saved his energy. He fell off the back at the second to last hill, but he was able to cause some damage to the other riders. Then, just as the last hill began, Rogers made his move.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2-2b.jpg

He started powering away and got a gap. 15 seconds... 20 seconds... 25 seconds... it appeared the others in the break didn't have an answer! 30 seconds... 35 seconds... and Rogers crested the final hill.

Could anyone catch him on the downhill?

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/2-2c.jpg

Absolutely not! Rogers completes the sweep of the Australian Championships in dominating fashion. The crashes in the Jayco Bay race are all forgotten. Remember Michael... Pain heals, chicks dig scars, but glory lasts forever.

Down Under Classic

A short sprinters race, this serves as a tune up for the Tour Down Under. After the Jayco Bay race, we should be well prepared for this.

Michael Rogers will be our team lead... but he's mainly competing as a chance to show off his new Australian Champion Jersey and because the race is paying us for him to ride. He won't be competing in the Tour Down Under, as we need to save him to concentrate on the Tour of California and the Giro. Ciolek will again be our sprinter.

Team:
Leader: Michael Rogers
Sprinter: Gerald Ciolek
Leadout/teammate: Marcel Sieberg
Teammate: Adam Hansen
Teammate: Bert Grabsch
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: John Devine
Free Rider: Servais Knaven (will send on a break just in case)

I didn't copy the profile for the race... but to sum it up it's short and flat. Should be a day for the sprinters.

Knaven got into an initial break which was brought back to the pelaton with 18 km to go. Then another attack occured and Rogers decided it would be fun to latch on and show off the jersey.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/3-1a.jpg

Suprisingly, after the break settled in... they had a lead of 50 seconds. So we figured... what the heck... and gave Rogers the green light to go all out for the finish.

Rogers did most of the pushing, and at 3km he was leading the escape group and had opened a small gap over the other escapees. He started his sprint and we hoped for the best.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/3-1b.jpg

Not quite enough though. Rogers was passed in the final meters by fellow break member Theo Eltink. Ciolek had another disappointing sprint finishing 9th.
