Today i was flown in to meet with the mostly belgian board of the team. I nearly spat my coffee on them when they presented me with my goals:
Winning the Tour de France AND the sprinters jersey! this would be no cruisy season for me and the team. Talking of the team I'd have to say im much happier to manage the 2008 squad then last years bunch, the addition of riders like Tjallingii, Gardeyn and most of all Yaroslav Popovych make our goals seem much more achievable.
Still unfamiliar with the squad and their abilities there was no time for me to settle in, our calendar beginning right away in January with the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic where we will send a team lead by Gorik Gardeyn, who will be looking to impress in his first race for the team, and Roy Sentjens. We are expecting a lot of crashes so one of our goals is to get our riders through unscathed.

Stage One
The team followed the plan i set out for the perfectly, quickly forming a tran of Vansevanant > Sentjens > Gardeyn with 20km to go. Disaster struck though, Gardeyn fell and was injured just as he tried to kick behind sentjens.
Sentjens surprised everyone though, taking second place after being the first to open up the sprint as Australian Menzies took a home victory.
Stage 2
With Gardeyn still injured it was once again up to Sentjens to represent us in the sprint. The plan was for him to hop onto Vansevenants wheel but we radioed him from the team car and told him to jump onto the Jelly Belly train which was looking the strongest. He did so and took another second behind huff, as well as the leaders and points jerseys.
Stage 3
Gardeyn was back and feeling strong today so we reverted to our original train and it worked beautifully, Gardeyn winning ahead of Bonnet with Sentjens in second and still in yellow.
Stage 4
The slight hill on this circuit wasnt very kind to the legs of our sprinters but Gardeyn managed to take 7th, Sentjens still leads overall.
Stage 5
There were some heated words after todays stage, as both Gardeyn and Sentjens had there chances ruined by a Credit Agricole rider who they were following when he dropped to the back of the peloton, delaying them enough to give them no chance in the sprint.
Review
A great start for the season. A stage win and overall victory with a squad that looks like it could do some damage early in the season.

Good start and good luck, Gardeyn seems to do well a lot in the Tour Down Under in this db, hopefully he wil do the same for you.
Hint: Maybe you could click the tab button to hide the names for when you take screenshots?

(No results due to above problem)
We were very happy with Cadel's efforts in both of these races, he himself was disappointed with his 2nd in the ITT, he told us he just didnt have the legs in the last section. He was much happier, however with his second in the RR behind Stuart O'Grady and in front of Trent Lowe. From our perspective these results are very promising for his season seeing as though he currently has absolutely no form.

After Sentjens great start to the season, we kept in Australia as our only chance for a mass sprint in the Down Under Classic. Bert Roesems will ride, as well as Maarten Tjallingii in his first outing for the team.
Roesems attacked with others at the start of the stage but he was too fast on the flat for the others and quickly ended up on his own and was looking very strong. with 26km to go he had around 4 minutes on the pack.
Sentjens had Renshaws wheel in the sprint behind but Bert was too strong and had timed his attack perfectly, taking an excellent victory.

This race wasn't on our calendar initially but Robbie had a chat to me about a week ago and said he would really like to participate. He also requested he have some lead out support so we pulled Gardeyn and Sentjens from the Tour Down Under squad to help him out as well as youngster Roelandts, riding in Silence Lotto colours for the first time.
The course has a mountain stage and a mountain TT where Tjallingii may be able to get a high position depending on who the other teams bring.
The first stage is a 3km ITT which should have seen Cancellara take an easy win but he finished a way back. We were pleased with the fine efforts by Roesems and Tjallingii and surprises Gardeyn and Roelandts, the latter of which took the young riders jersey.

yup rjc - might turn it up to hard if i win to much but i normally get so pissed off at how the game melts my computer (which can run things like FEAR and Oblivion fine) during races and forget to concentrate on winning

How come you decided to make the Tour de San Luis a more important race to the ProTour opener? Surely you didnt need to take both Sentjens and Gardeyn out of the TDU?

According to the 4th Stage of the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic:
It's so good to see Austrians winning, especially Haselbacher because he's a good friend of my grandpa!
But i also want to see you winning many races! Good story and please, please keep it on! It's an interesting team! |
