Protecting Leader
ringo182
Hi

I often find myself attacking with two riders, either with both from the peloton or with a rider in the break who waits for my leader up the road. When attacking with two riders which is the most effective way of riding, assuming you have a definite leader.

1. Have you team-mate ride on the front on the dot and have your leader sit on his wheel.
2. Have your team-mate protect your leader who rides on the dot himself
3. Have both riders rider together in relay and share the workload

Cheers

Hmm, I wonder how much if any difference 1. and 2. make. Also I'd say it depends on the course, distance to finish line and skills of the riders. Say it's up and down and then flat for a while and then uphill to the finish line. You'd want the team mate to lead and work hard on the flat part and be exhausted when they reach the final climb.

So before then, I'd let the leader ride on the dot uphill and drag his team mate along (who'll be suffering, hopefully not too much), downhill it depends on the skills, if the team mate is excellent downhill he should lead already, otherwise I'd relay until they reach the flat and then the team mate has to do all the work.
