Japan Cup
Took a good 30km for a breakaway to form but in the end it was just two riders who got away, they were Alaphilippe and Mutsumine. They were held at around 4 minutes during the stage.
Monfort goes down in a crash which could potentially seriously damge Gazelle’s chances of taking the PCT crown, will he be able to re join? He has 60km to do so
Evonik, Bank of Ireland and and Puma were dictating the pace at the front, they brought the gap down to two minutes with 38km left.
The gap was halved 14km later, it isn’t looking good for the breakaway
The first attacks came on a downhill stretch with 23km left, Ben Nasser and Meyer were the two people on the move.
They were joined by five more riders Betancourt, Roy, Zingle, Di Maggio and Dowsett were the rider who managed to bridge up. They managed to open up a huge gap of 47 seconds! They were 48 seconds behind the breakaway
Evonik managed to chase down the seven man group and reeled them in with 15km left, the break was still 48 seconds ahead
McCarthy put in huge attack with 13km left!
No one could follow McCarthy’s huge acceleration!
McCarthy passed the breakaway, they would fall back in to the peleton.
Monfort was feeling the effects of his crash and was dropped with 13km to go, his entire team accompanied him.
Entering the final lap of the circuit McCarthy was leading by 20 seconds, can he hold on to his lead?
Nothing happened on the ascent steeper hill but there was a split on the descent! The riders in the elite 16 man group were Chaves, Betancourt, Zingle, Di Maggio, Teklit, Alaphilippe, Felline, Ben Nasser, Kelderman, Klemme, Meyer, Sanchez Gil, Costa, Boswell, Craven and Siskevicius. The peleton didn’t chase the move.
Dowsett managed to bridge up to the 16 man group with 7km left. The group was 40 seconds behind the lone leader McCarthy
McCarthy was ahead by 35 seconds with 4km left, but he seemed tired…
With 1.7km left for the peleton a chaotic burst for the line was initiated, McCarthy was ahead by 27 seconds
Di Maggio seemed to get the best getaway, Sanchez Gil was glued to his wheel.
Sanchez Gil overtook Di Maggio. Boswell was gathering speed on the left while on the other side of the road Klemme was accelerating. 600m left
Klemme was flying and he overtook everyone, except McCarthy who was just in front of him, can he hold on?
McCarthy holds on to take the victory! Klemme finishes just behind him and Costa wraps up the podium in third place.
Monfort rolled across the line eight minutes later in 141st place. Aegon didn’t score any points either.
