Tour of America - Stage 18

Last hilly stage in the tour (except of the partly hilly timetrial on next day): Ephrata. Featuring a hilly loop close to a flat finish, spectators will surely enjoy some hopefully great action here.

Lövkvist under pressure with Berhane coming close in the GC. Also Antón is becoming a real threat for Anacona, who's aiming to defend his podium. Zardini looked strong yesterday and already did well in the previous hilly stages.

Breakaways are becoming more and more succesfull in this final week and so those 8 riders will hope for another breakaway to survive:

The peloton doesn't allow them to establish a too huge gap and so the break is leading by 2'47" with now 42km left. A moment of shock for a GC-contender:

Now just 12km to go and while the breakaway seems to survive (leading by two minutes), we see the first GC-contenders attacking on the last climb in this loop:

Zardini (11th in the GC) as the first to go and Lövkvist is apparently willing to do better than in the most recent mountain stages!

Zardini again looking like the strongest GC-contender on hilly stages, as he drops Lövkvist close to the hilltop with now 10km to go! He's 1'20" behind the leading group, where Arroyo launched an empty-handed attack a few moments before..

Lövkvist 15" behind Zardini, but still with a gap on Augustyn, who indeed dropped Berhane/Penasa!

Antón and Panayotov joined group Berhane and those five are 25" ahead of the pack, where Anacona is in danger to lose additional time today!

Back to the front, where Kohler kicks off the sprint for line honours! Tough luck for Zardini, who once again fails to catch up to the breakaway..

A clear gap on the following group, so Lövkvist bounces back from his losses on the previous days!

So indeed another loss for Anacona, while Berhane had to see Lövkvist extending his GC-lead back to 57 seconds today. Antón now just 12 seconds behind Anacona, who probably won't fight for the GC-win anymore. Zardini's efforts make him move up to 9th and Arroyo goes up to 18th in the GC.

Tomorrow's partly hilly, partly flat timetrial may suit Lövkvist better than Berhane, but the fight for the overall victory is still open with also a mountain stage to come.
