Herald Sun Tour - Stage 2
TheManxMissile
i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/stage%202_zpsxcz6fpjk.png

Stage 2! 168km with a couple of serious obstacles. The big climb is Mt. Alexander and then ther final climb tops out just 6.5km from the line. Like yesterday you've got to favor the sprinters who can climb.

Proceedings begin immediately with attacks right off the line. The first portion of the stage sees a group of 17 riders trying to go clear but the sprinters teams like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Indosat and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sancor won't let it get clear.

After aout 40km three riders go get clear. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Daspuntasg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/otp.png Mahdar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Hung make the breakaway trio. And in fact that was the order they went through IS1 after 45km.
With Hill stats of 73, 73 and 74 respectively it's a very dangerous move on a stage like this.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-1_zpseyhtjym7.png

Around the halfway point of the day the breaks gap tops out at 5'00, but it's not a full chase yet, just the peloton starting to pull back a few seconds here and there.
IS2 comes after 88km and it's Mahdar ahead of Daspuntasg and Hung, with the gap around 4'25.

50km to go and the break hits the slopes of Mt. Alexander. They labour up to the summit where Hung attacks for big KoM points ahead of Daspuntasg. You can see the peloton in the background but the gap is still 3'45. And in fact the peloton splits on the climb, but none of the favorites for the stage or gc lose out.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-2_zpsvwdzuasn.png

Coming to 20km to go and the breakaway is still clear. The gap is down but only to 1'50 and on a lumpy run in like this, do they stand a chance?

With 11km to go the break blasts through IS3, with Mahdar getting the points ahead of Daspuntasg and Hung, with their gap at still 1'44! You can see panic in the breakaway now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava decide enough is enough and send Langeveld to the front.

So with 6.5km left the break crests the final KoM point. Hung takes the points, and the jersey, ahead of Mahdar and Daspuntasg. Their gap has plummeted to 40" due entirely to the efforts of Langeveld who has been a star for Strava today.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-3_zpsnjeohdk3.png

5km to go! The break is not surrendering today as the road begins to flatten out. They are holding Langeveld at bay but still 40". The Dutchman is a strong rider but he can't do this all alone but not even another Strava rider seems willing to help... The peloton are on the verge of throwing this away!

3km to go and the trio hangs on by 30", still against Langeveld who's been pulling solo for something like 8 kilometers now.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-4_zpslyoi0tbz.png

With just 2km remaining finally the peloton awakens. Or rather it is attacked! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Aidis Kruopis opens up and shoots forwards. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava are stunned and Langeveld is blown.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-5_zps7ulklpkq.png

1.3km and Kruopis catches the breakaway! A valiant fight by the trio but the Lithuanian is a man possessed and they are too tired to compete. The peloton only now reacts to the attack, lead by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Corioni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Richeze.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-6_zpshjawk4no.png

The question is, has Kruopis gone too soon?

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Herald%202015/2-7_zpslwctrdx3.png

No! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Kruopis goes back-to-back in Australia in dominating fashion! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Sulzberger comes through for 2nd place, and hats off to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/otp.png Mahdar as best of the breakaway in 3rd.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Richeze finished ok for 4th as time trialists pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Boaro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Tennant claim 5th and 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Daspuntsag holds for 7th, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png King gets two Gatorades in the Top10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Langeveld gets some reward for his monumental efforts in 9th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Rosskopf claims 10th.
