Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 7
SportingNonsense
The final flat stage of the race, and the fact that it is harder than the first two will surely help Grosu, in his bid to stop Zabel. Last chance for Van Poppel, Groenewegen and others too.

11 attack from the gun: Skjerping, Turek, Le Gac, Tanovitchii, Gichora, Campos, Smit, Senyenov, Fritsch, Cooper and Koch. But this large group brings out the frenzied chase from Egger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb2.jpg

In the end, just 5 make it away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Smit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Le Gac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Turek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Skjerping and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Gichora.

So Le Gac is back for more after wasting a seemingly ideal opportunity yesterday, after just not having the legs. There's no interest in the KoM sprints, but he does pick up 8 pts to add to those gained yesterday, and climb a little to 7th in the KoM standings.

Oz control the pack for most of the day, and do reduce the break's lead from its 6 minute peak. At 34km to go, Dieteren kicks off the more concerted chase, with the lead at 3'40.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb4.jpg

It's down to 2'20 within the next 7km, as Project 1t4i and Aegon help out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb5.jpg

With 16km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Skjerping attacks the breakaway and gets a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb6.jpg

He is still leading with just 5km to go. 30 seconds on his former companions, and 2 minutes on the peloton, whose chasing efforts have stalled - and actually gone the wrong way. Looks like a breakaway win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Le Gac makes his move now, to try to close that gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb8.jpg

The peloton are still setting up for a sprint but lacked the firepower to maintain the chase, to make this for a win.

Grosu not even sprinting today. Not bothered if not for the win, or is he injured after his crash earlier in the race?

Back to the front. Le Gac initially cut into Skjerping's advantage but could not maintain it, so now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Smit tries to close the 27 second gap, with just 2.2km remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Skjerping moves towards the final kilometre, but the South African is much quicker and closing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb11.jpg

Getting closer and closer, as the Norwegian tries to sprint what he has left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoffer Skjerping just holds on to win the stage! Smit a close 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Turek sprints in for 3rd, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Gichora actually beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Le Gac. Two successful breaks for the Frenchman, and two complete failures.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zabel crushes the opposition to win the sprint for 6th, from Groenwegen, Van Poppel and Cerny.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/beb15.jpg

It gives Zabel the Points lead back, but only just, as Lecuisinier finished 10th. No way can the German hold on to his 1 point lead with 2 mountain stage and a time trial remaining.

Solid sprints for Altanzul and Cancellara for 11th and 13th, with Ewan in between them, while Sinclair, Bauhaus and Willwohl earned a race best Top 20 finish.
