Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 3
SportingNonsense
The first hills of the race, and perhaps the best suited stage to the likes of McCarthy and Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa1.jpg

KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Manfred makes the breakaway in a bid to maintain his lead. There's strong competition from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Gougeard, who is great on the hills but lost time in the crosswinds yesterday. while completing the move are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Jacobsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Mraouni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Orken.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa2.jpg

Gougeard wins 2 of the first 3 climbs to close the gap, despite Manfred winning the other.

There's a crash in the pack with 42km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Ewan goes down, and takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Morton with him!!! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Matte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Edwards also involved, and worst off is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Enger who fractured his hip and is forced to abandon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa3.jpg

The entire Oz team of course drop back to support Morton, meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png La Lavandier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Eyob attack. Pellaud and La Lavandier catch up with Gougeard, Orken and Mraouni, who have dropped the other 2 in the break, and the Festina rider now takes a provisional KoM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa4.jpg

Bravo and Eyob are in between the lead group and the peloton, which is 1'30 behind.

A monumental effort from Oz Cycling Project sees Morton regain contact on the climb! They managed to get close enough at the bottom for Morton (with Haig and Watson) to use the hill to catch the back end of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa5.jpg

It's just in time, as the race closes in on the penultimate hill and the business end of the stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Dieteren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Tanovitchii attack the peloton, followed by Lutsenko and McCarthy.

That goes to nothing, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy tries again. This time he is alone, and he storms past the breakaway to move into the lead of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa6.jpg

The peloton catches the break, while Olivier, Mohoric, Bablidze, Cort Nielsen and Kudus all make short moves to try to go clear. The stronger looking move is from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa7.jpg

He gets a gap and goes chasing after McCarthy, while next to get a slight advantage are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Ludvigsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa8.jpg

The gaps are small on the final hill. 20 second for McCarthy on Lutsenko, Lecuisinier and Olivier, then another 16 to the peloton led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Cerny.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Dieteren then attacks, to all but close that 16 gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy stays in front though, actually extending his lead slightly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Lutsenko is next, and only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Olivier has remained with him, as Lecuisinier is now first of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa11.jpg

3 kilometres to the line, and they fly by for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Jay McCarthy. Stage win and race lead for the Aussie!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Olivier beats Lutsenko to 2nd. Some useful bonus seconds, as well as a likely time gain. The duo were 23 seconds after McCarthy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa13.jpg

A strong sprint from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Herklotz for 5th place puts the peloton gap at 50 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/esa14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Ikibe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Cort Nielsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Shikai finish next, then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier. After seeing his twin brother attack earlier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png La Lavandier secures himself a Top 10 stage result. Morton is 21st, greatly relieved to have kept his GC hopes alive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Zmorka was last of the front group of 27, and the fact he tailed off that group actually helped the next group end on the same time. He drops to 2nd overall behind McCarthy, but keeps the Points lead. Olivier is now 4th at 12 seconds, the best placed of the GC riders. Gougeard takes the KoM lead.
