Tour de l'Avenir - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
The first road stage keeps the race in Strasbourg, for what should be a sprint finish. Saying that, the first road stage of the Avenir has often been won by breakaways - and last year all flat stages went that way. To potentially complicate matters, there is an intermediate sprint within the final 10km, which has been known to distract sprinters in past races.

Well the breakaway option was exceedingly popular at the start, with a group of 15 forming! Varhanik, Baska, Sutterlin, Muhlberger, Lienhard, Orken, Gauthier, Doull, Drobisch, Ludvigsson, Exner, Manfred, Pibernik, Losch and Fritsch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb2.jpg

VolksWagen recognise this needs to be controlled early, a group that big can't be allowed to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Egger devotes himself to the chase, and in the end only 3 are allowed to stay away.

The first climb of the race is closely fought, with Kenyan Hussein Manfred just beating Pibernik to take the first KoM jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb4.jpg

It's a windy day, and the chase of the peloton stretches the pack right out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Räim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Tirloni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zepuntke doing most of the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb5.jpg

A group of riders does get dropped from the pack in the wind, but there are now GC riders or sprinters amongst them.

Egger returns to pace setting to finish the job, along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Tanovitchii, with Pibernik the last of the break to be caught just inside the 10km to go mark.

And the sprinters do decide to go for the late intermediate! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Grosu
taking it from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Afewerki. Will that hurt their energy reserves?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb6.jpg

Onto the sprint for the finish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Groenewegen has the foremost 'train' with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Edmondson leading the way. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van Poppel follows him, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Räim is there for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Grosu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb7.jpg

VolksWagen are trying to build a train with Tirloni and Zepunkte for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zabel but the positioning isn't great, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Carsi are the other sprinters up there. No sign of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Enger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Groenewegen immediately opens his sprint, but can going for a long one really work with Van Poppel on his wheel? Grosu, Ewan, Afewerki and Carsi give chase, while the pace of Zepunkte is not up to much, and Zabel is a long way down as he starts his own acceleration.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb8.jpg

Into the final kilometre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van Poppel moves past his fellow Dutchman to take the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Grosu is challenging them, but here comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zabel. He's fast, but a long way back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb10.jpg

He's not just fast, he's very fast. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Rick Zabel storms through to take the stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb11.jpg

That could have been pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van Poppel's best ever stage win chance but it ends in 2nd place, while Grosu beats Groenewegen for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Afewerki takes 5th place in his return to Eritel colours, beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Ewan in a straight fight, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Enger who came from a long way back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/Avenir/asb12.jpg

Zepunkte, Carsi and Tirloni complete the Top 10, with Lecuisinier the leading GC rider in 11th. Zmorka takes 15th, picking up a point to maintain an outright Points classification lead, as well as maintaining the race lead.
