Volta a Portugal - Stage 9
Atlantius
Volta a Portugal - Stage 9

Time for the big day that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Machado have been waiting for and pretty much everyone else have been dreading.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-01.png

Six riders try to get away and the peloton donn't mind so they quickly get a good gap. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Siskevicius, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Boonratanatanakorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hoem, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Izagirre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mac.png Becarra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Juul-Jensen.
Assuming the big names will take the final climb only Siskevicius have a shot at taking the mountain jersey today. 2 points will go to someone in the peloton on the Cat 1 though…

The break enters the first big climb with a gap of 7 minutes.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-02.png
Vontobel sets a pace that allows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Lane to hang in there. That is slower than the break but fast enough to see 26 rider drop already on the first part of the climb.
Biggest names behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Quaade.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-03.png
Boonratanatanakorn attacks for the KOM from 1,5 km out but Siskevicius is awake, covers him and easily goes past to take max points on the first climb.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-04.png
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Le Gac jumps ahead to take the two points left behind for the peloton. That means we now have THREE riders on 32 points.
The peloton is down to 88 riders and have 8'43 to the break.

Le Gac pushes on hoping to copy pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Vermeltfoorts strategy. At the foot of the Cat. 2 he has 7'20 to the break and 11 km to catch them if he wants to get points on the climb. 55 seconds further back comes the peloton, still lead by Vontobel.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-05.png
Siskevicius is first to move towads the top of the Cat. 2 but apparently the Siam Cement rider holds somekind of grudge against him as he covers the move and goes past at the 1 km mark taking max points and leaving Siskevicius at 31 pts and himself at 23 points which means that he hastop 4 in the stage to battle for the jersey.
Le Gac still hanging between the break and the peloton so no points but plenty of respect goes to him.

50 km and 7'58 between the break and the peloton. Le Gac has 1'05 to the peloton.
40 km and 7'12. Le Gac is back in he peloton.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-06.png
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png RBC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Prio - Porto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Children of Chernobyl have taken over the chase.
27 km and 6'20. From now it's uphill pretty much all the way to the finish line.
20 km and 5'48
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-07.png
And we have action in the peloton.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Cataldo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Nazaret opens the charge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Boily and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Kangert reacts immediately. 33 riders remain in the peloton - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Lane impresses by still sitting in the first half.
15,5 km and 5'00
Machado and Boily managed to bridge the gap to the trio.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-08.png
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kwiatkowski leads a chasing quartet. With him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Nepomnyachsniy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Kangert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Tvetcov.
They make full advantage of the small downhill sector at the middle of the climb to bridge the gap to the five aheah.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-09.png
Hoem sets a hard pace in the break andsuddenly the group cracks. Only Izagirre and Juul-Jensen can follow the Norwegian. The Dane can only hang on for a short while though and with 12,5 km to go it's a front duo.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-10.png
Machado have met a lot of criticism for his passive riding earlier in the race, but now he shows why he was so confident that he could wait for today.
Nazaret and Kangert are those that come the closest to following the Portuguese climber.

Let's have a look at the gaps as Izagirre and Hoem enter the final 10 km:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-11.png
For the record Sikevicius can still get into the KOM battle if he finishes inside top 11 of the stage.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-12.png
The favourites in the 6-rider group are attacking in turns. They could very well finish one rider at a time in the end.
Kwiatkowski and Bennett manage to create a gap together while Tvetcov is dropped.
Let's have another look at the gaps with 5 km to go for the front duo:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-13.png
Kwiatek and Bennett are caught agin by the other favourites with 4 km to go. That moment also appears to put the final nail in the coffin for Siskevicius' polka-dot dreams.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-14.pngpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-15.png
Hoem starts the sprint in the final km
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-16.png
Izagirre reacts too late and has to make do with 2nd place despite having the kick to go past the Norwegian had he timed it better.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-17.png
Machado takes 3rd proving why he was the name on everyones lips before the race.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-18.png
Then: Becarra - Nazaret - Juul-Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Portugal/MG-VPo-St9-19.png

25 Rides abandon. Most prominently pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Johansson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Quaade who could have done well on the ITT.
