USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 6
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/Stage 6.jpg

Almost a week into the race now. Here we have a hard stage to come, two HC climbs with some steep hills towards the finish.

And .... the stage got off to an astounding start. The following made up the earliest attacks: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Nieve. Good climbers testing the mettle of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak and his team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E1.jpg
Barely 10 KM into the race.

A really strong 8 man break has '30 over the bunch. It includes the points jersey, mountain jersey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Gilanipoor!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E2.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma makes the break!

By the summit of the first climb things have calmed down and a four man break is established. The big headline being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma, who claimed the 20 KOM points, has made the break! At just 3'26 down in the GC he definitely isn't out of it, especially now he made the break!

Also in the break: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Belmokhtar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png De Greef and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E3.jpg

Over the top of the first climb we see three riders attack on the descent out of the peloton. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Dabrowski, stage 4 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Haga (@ 3'57) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Moreno Hernandez (@ 2'34). It wouldn't be long before these riders join up with the four ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E4.jpg
90 KM to go: Peloton @ 5'00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma moved into the provisional lead in the polka dots as he claimed the 20 KOM points on offer at the summit of the second HC climb of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E5.jpg

Behind we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Hansen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Bonnafond and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Sakalou (who claimed minor KOM points to move into 2nd place) attack out of the peloton. After a long chase they would end up just '30 behind the 7 man breakaway, however, they would lose ground and fall backwards when the road started to kick up again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E6.jpg

Now a familiar sight here, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png In-n-Out Cycling were left to do most of the chasing. Going into the 1. cat clmb with 40 KM to go, however, the break were still well under 3'00 ahead, a change in the GC lead looking unlikely at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E7.jpg
24 KM to go: 21 man peloton @ 2'16.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma has now all but secured the KOM jersey with the points he has added to his tally today.

The break have a handy advantage still over the favourites group, which has been demolished over the penultimate climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E8.jpg
The decimated favourites group.

Some GC favourites really put down the hammer on that climb, notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Gilanipoor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Senni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Domagalski, who started the stage in the top 5, have been dropped from the 21 strong group as those GC men who are having a bad day or who don't like the steep hills too much are being found out.

Even further behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Baz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tt1.png Peterson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Nieve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Girardi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Taciak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Koep: all of these would give up the ghost of the chase today and saunter home over 8'00 behind most of the GC favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E9.jpg
10 KM to go: Break @ 1'37.

We hit the bottom of the final little climb of the day. The break will contest the win, the gap to the yellow jersey group being a good sized one of a 1 minute and a half. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma hasn't done enough to move up to the high echelons of the GC, however, he will put time into those ahead today as will pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Moreno Hernandez, let us not forget him although the Argentinian rider has just been dropped from the now 6 man break.

The first of the break to try for victory are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Dabrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Belmokhtar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E10.jpg

Back in the peloton: we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Shushemoin attack, he drags pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez, of all people, along with him for the ride!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E11.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Belmokhtar leads on the downhill to the finish.

After him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Dabrowski were caught the Algerian attacked again, over the top of the final climb. He has a '20 advantage with some 6 KM to go, can he hold those behind? He isn't the best descender: evident from the way pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Haga is eating into the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E12.jpg

With just 1 KM to go, a fast KM. He is within sight as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma leads the charge behind.

Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Belmokhtar salvage this race for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E13.jpg
Yes! Victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava!

He manages to hold 'em off on this action-packed stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Haga, finished 2nd, what a race for him! He moves up to joint first in the points competition with that result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Atapuma finishes the stage 3rd, ahead of the rest of the break. All this will see him rise to 6th in the GC, now 1'33 behind the GC leader.....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/E14.jpg

.... which is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak. Those two late punchy attackers are closed down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy.

Other notable changes in the GC, out of many, see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez rise into the top 5 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Senni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Domagalski plummet.

Abandonments: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Yeung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tt1.png Mejias.
