USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 5
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/Stage 5.jpg

On to stage 5 then. Will that hilly finish see gaps amongst the GC men? Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak hold the GC lead?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS1.jpg

The early break:

- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Chawchiangkuang
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Giger
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Moreno Hernandez
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Schoffmann
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Walker

The best placed in GC being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Chawchiangkuang @ 6'51. So no real dangers for the GC men there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS2.jpg

As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Giger is the first to summit the climb with 120 KM to go we see two attackers out of the peloton: are they just after minor KOM points?

No, they are not! The two attackers continue on, they are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Hansen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito.

Interesting that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito was allowed to get away (he started the stage at 3'32 down in GC).

Shortly afterwards, 3rd in the KOM comp, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Sakalou attacks out the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS3.jpg

And the three riders manage to bridge across to the five out-front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Carlsberg - Danske Bank and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Actavis - DKSH with the advantage of having two in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS4.jpg
57 KM to go: Break @ 4'11.

Not counting a short plateau there is a long descent ahead of the break, who still look under control from the peloton. Belarusian champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Sakalou, claims the max KOM points on offer to move into the joint lead there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS5.jpg
27 KM to go: Break @ 2'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png DeLaval - Kiitokori were helping out with the chase for much of the stage but it is now all up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png In-n-Out to control the break out-front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS6.jpg
17 KM to go: Break @ 2'51!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png In-n-Out are really struggling to halt the advance of the break. Remember pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito started the stage 3'32 down, are we in for a shock change in the GC lead?

With 14 KM to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Chawchiangkuang and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Moreno Hernandez attack out of the break, which will contest the win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS7.jpg
10 KM to go: Break @ 3'41!

After the previous attack comes to nothing, the aggressive, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Chawchiangkuang attacks again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito is now, just about, in the virtual GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Chawchiangkuang just about holds his lead with 1.3 KM to go, when the rest of the break catch up to him on the steep hill to the finish. The gap to the peloton just about unchanged.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Moreno Hernandez is done for out-front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS9.jpg
Under 1 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Giger, despite riding on the front of the break longer than anyone, goes into the lead on the climb. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Schoffmann looks within catching distance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito will be fighting out for 3rd place then, and the bonus seconds that brings. He still looks like he will be moving into the GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS10.jpg

Stage win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Actavis - DKSH. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Giger was the strongest and wins with a gap back to the rest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Schoffmann, 2nd, isn't the one to keep his team's recent win streak in stage races continued.

3rd place goes to .... pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Walker. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito, misses out on the bonus seconds, finishes in 4th, however, the GC lead could still be his.

How did the GC men take the final climb to the finish?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png In-n-Out mob the front positions of the peloton as they try to keep the GC lead. In his efforts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy even manages to unknowingly distance teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak as gaps start to appear.

Only seconds separate a potential GC change...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/USA/SS12.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak holds the GC lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Actavis - DKSH will have to be content with the stage win as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Morabito (up to 2nd in GC) came up 7 seconds to short, if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Giger would have sacrificed the stage win the Swiss rider would be leading the GC! 8 seconds for finishing 3rd after all.

On the hill to the finish pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak distanced the rest of his GC challengers.

He puts '26 into pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko and '52 into the rest of the favourites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Senni, now 3rd in GC, is now 1'03 down.

What a stage that turned out to be!
