A big stage coming up here. Two HC climbs are in order, but with a 17 KM descent down to the finish will we see the GC men in action?
After an early break featuring Chaabane & Tennant is brought back we see the true break form:
- Bonnafond
- Chawchiangkuang
- Senni
Fox Sports - Golomt Cycling set a high pace going into the first climb of the day.
64 KM to go - break @ 5'10.
Senni summits the first climb to bring in 20 KM points. Nothing of note happens, apart from a lot of suffering. All the favourites are still in the peloton, including the yellow jersey, which totals around 76 riders.
Jones would attack over the top of the first climb.
In the valley between the two climbs we see, Danish champ, Ebsen attack out of the peloton as a few of the American teams set the pace.
33 KM to go - foot of final climb.
3 man break Jones@ 1'05 Ebsen@ 2'22 75 man peloton @ 3'07
Can the two riders, in no mans land, inch their way across to the original break?
Fireworks from a favourite!
With some 9 KM to go on the tough climb we see Atapuma attack! A strong pace from DeLaval - Kiitokori could do nothing to stop that one. A risky move. But, will it pay off?
As Chawchiangkuang is the first to be dropped from the break outfront, the peloton don't lose their heads. A In-n-Out Cycling Team Powered By Carrefour domestique ups the pace with Domagalski itching to put in an attack.
Anacona ups the pace!
With his compatriot pulling away from the peloton and vast closing up on those ahead Anacona comes to the front of the peloton. He doesn't attack, but when he sets the pace no-one else can follow.
Domagalski tries to follow and gets clear of the rest of the ever-dwindling peloton.
21 KM to go - 3 KM to go on climb
Senni, Bonnafond Anacona, Atapuma@ '45 Ebsen, Domagalski, Jones@ 1'00 29 man peloton @ 1'23
Senni is ahead of the rest, can he hold off the Colombians?
The rear of the peloton with the mountaintop approaching.
Girardi is desperately clinging to the rear of the peloton, c.25 riders.
This stage really has found some of the big names wanting. Ochoa Quintero, Koep, Rodas, Haga and Roe have all been well dropped today.
The two Colombians look well matched as they near the mountaintop. Definitely the riders to beat for this GC, based on this showing.
Senni summits the final climb first, 40 KOM points for him today.
But, can he hold off those behind?
With 17 KM to go:
Senni Atapuma, Anacona, Bonnafond@ '30 Domagalski@ 1'00 21 man peloton @ 1'41
Domagalski, the only other rider to go clear apart from the Colombians, has no problem whatsoever bridging across on the descent to the favourites.
The question is can the 21 man group bridge across to group Anacona? They have to make up 1'10 on the descent.
Senni being a good descender, is actually putting time into those behind. And plenty of it! You couldn't tell he was out in a gruelling break all day. The stage win is looking more and more likely, barring an accident.
Behind the 21 man group are really eating into group Anacona on the descent. However, it will be touch and go whether the gap can be bridged.
Gilanipoor and Dyachenko giving it everything. The group, up ahead, are within sight with less than 5 KM to go.
No doubt about the stage win though.
Senni holds off from the break to take the stage win and GC lead. A commanding GC lead as well, the next group will come at 1'10.
Domagalski and Atapuma lead home a 25 man group at 1'10. In the last meters the four man group were caught, all of that attacking proving fruitless for the daring favourites today.
After losing time today will the likes of Ochoa Quintero, Koep, Rodas, Haga and Roe try and get into the breaks now?
So like last season a breakaway rider has a commanding lead in the GC. But is it insurmountable?
