There's no doubting that this is a mountain stage. Is anyone able to challenge Pluchkin, or are they focusing more on securing a podium already?
A 6 man breakaway gets away.
Clearly spotting the downhill finish, stage winner Paolo Scarponi is back in the breakaway. He will also eyeing up KoM points, as will former leader in that competition Johan Esteban Chaves.
Tinkoff took the teams classification lead yesterday but there is no 4th consecutive breakaway for Zakarin today, and in fact nobody at all. Closest rivals Pendleton's do have a man there in Konstantin Siutsou - the Belarussian knows how to perform from breakaways, as the Dauphine showed.
David De la Cruz is back on the attack too after 4th, and best of the break, in an earlier mountain stage. Wildcards Euskaltel send Arnold Jeannesson. They'd love a stage win, and so would France! Laos national champion Alex Ariya Destribois is the last one in there - teammate Alarcon won the previous time he was in the break.
20 points on the Col d'Izoard for Scarponi, moves him back to within 1 point of leader Pluchkin.
The Izoard summit marks 61km to go, and the break led by some 8 minutes. As the peloton approach the top, Thomas Faiers puts in an attack. 8th in the Giro thanks to a breakaway, he is already 15 minutes down on 8th place overall here, at 18th place.
Tom Jelte Slagter tries to use his descending skills to also clear on the downhill, but surprisingly marking him is Aleksandr Pluchkin! Amador, Taaramae and Alarcon too.
That leads to be nothing, but the signs of aggression do not pass, as Joseph Dombrowski makes a move early on the 2nd climb, the Col de Montgenevre. Pluchkin, Alarcon and Amador are the first with him, as Sicard and Uran are next to move.
The breakaway summit the climb, and Chaves actually beats Scarponi. But the latter now takes the provisional lead.
5'40 later is Faiers.
Then at 8'20 the first group of attackers:
Sicard
Dombrowski
Pluchkin
Alarcon
Amador
At 9 minutes a larger chasing group:
Taaramäe
Valls
Monsalve
Kolesnikov
Martin
Úran
Henao Montoya
Velits
While Lecuisinier, some of his teammates, and Morton are at the front of the peloton - over 10 minutes off the breakaway.
The racing continues on the downhill, and a superb effort sees Rein Taaramäe bridge across to the Pluchkin group.
Monsalve almost makes it as well, but as soon as the downhill ends, Alarcon, Pluchkin, Dombrowski and Amador attack, putting Sicard and Taaramae into difficulty.
They fight their way back, and in this lull Martin is trying to work together with Monsalve to close the gap. But Amador now strikes again!
This has broken Taaramäe and Sicard, they can't respond again.
A gap of 40 seconds quickly opens up between them. Another 36 then to Monsalve and Martin, who are 26 ahead of Uran, Velits, Kolesnikov, Henao.
Add 2 minutes to Lecuisinier, who is the only rider to have attacked from the peloton on this climb.
Scarponi and Siutsou attacked the break 4km from the summit. They were brought back a kilometre later, but it saw Chaves dropped. Siutsou would go again, and leads over the summit of the Colle de Sestriere with a small 15 second lead.
More minor points for Scarponi here, but it confirms that he will be the new KoM leader. Now for the stage battle. 9km of downhill to go, and Siutsou is a weaker descender than the 4 chasers - their gap remains huge on the rest of the race.
Faiers is picked up by the Pluchkin group, but still stands to gain a lot here.
Martin is attacking across to Taaramae and Sicard, but they are now over a minute down on Pluchkin and co. Monsalve still fighting, 20 seconds later.
But despite their best efforts - often attacking each other on the climb - the group of Uran, Velits, Henao, Valls and Kolesnikov have slipped to nearly 1'30 behind Monsalve and just 1 minute ahead of the peloton (where Morton is said to be attacking). Lecuisinier has joined them, having trailed by 2 minutes earlier in the climb.
Uran's Top 5 hopes may be slipping away here.
Now Konstantin Siutsou is quickly closing in on the final kilometre, and still leading the way - despite Destribois and Scarponi being particularly good descenders. Gap just 8 seconds though as Jeannesson leads the sprint from behind.
Leading out may not be a bad idea on a downhill sprint and that gap to Siutsou is closing and closing. Scarponi won't be winning today, but De la Cruz has passed him and is going fast.
Siutsou is caught with just 100 metres to go as Jeannesson and De la Cruz lunge for a photo finish ... and it's a win for Euskaltel and for France! Arnold Jeannesson has done it!
Unlucky for Movistar as the wildcards deny them, while Scarponi beats Siutsou for 3rd. Destribois takes 5th, with Chaves home in 6th a minute and a half later.
Meanwhile it has all gone even more pear-shaped for that Uran group. They've stopped working together, sat up, and lost a further minute as they fall back to the peloton of 25 behind them.
Andrei Amador looked very strong today and he leads in the sprint for 7th place as he makes a big step towards 2nd overall. Alarcon is 8th and could move into a podium position, while 9th gives Pluchkin 7 points - that gap to Bewley now 19.
Great day for Faiers. He can be pleased with his rider, although it will only gain him 1 GC position. And Dombrowski is now not only running away with the U25 classification, but he is the 2nd Pendleton's rider home with no Tinkoff rider in sight. They will retake the Teams Classification lead, and by some distance.
A strong finish from Sicard, Martin and Taaramae sees their deficit cut to 51 seconds. This means Taaramae stays 3rd overall - just 1 second ahead of Alarcon - but now 1'23 behind Amador. Sicard holding 5th just over a minute behind them.
Martin is now just 10 seconds ahead of Dombrowski in the fight for 6th, but they are 2 minutes off Sicard for the Top 5 spot.
Monsalve is 50 seconds later, and a great ride that moves him up to 10th place with a good couple of minute's margin, since the peloton then finish nearly 2 and half minute later, Velits and Lecuisinier leading them home. Uran and Velits lose ground on those above them, and the others losing hope of a Top 10 position at all.
The breakaway helps De la Cruz up to 18th overall, not far behind team leader Fothen. Scarponi is now 21st, and Siutsou 23rd. All ahead of Venchi's struggling leader Duarte, and Good Energy's intended leader Cattaneo.
