Stage 16 is hill-rated. But it looks like a mountain stage. Who will it suit? More on the hill stat would be good for Taaramae and Sicard, as they look to move up from 3rd and 5th. Can anyone challenge Pluchkin?

But after their lead went out to over 7 minutes at the first categorised climb, on the long gentle incline that followed Metinvest set a strong pace - with all of their riders involved. This cut the gap to 2'40 as the race descends to the intermediate sprint, and then the next climbs.

Becherovka, Organge and Aker joined in the pacemaking here, but it actually didn't help. At the top of the Cat 2 climb, with 30km to go, the gap to the break has stabilised at 3 minutes.

Unlike the previous two days, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Zakarin has a chance to add to his KoM collection today. He starts today on 33 points, and battled with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Chaves - the former KoM leader, who has 31 points. The Russian wins on both occasions, and the 16 points gained put him into a provisional lead of 49 - 1 ahead of Pluchkin.

Still the gap is not going down, as the riders now face up to 20 uphill kilometres to the finish line, slowly increasing in steepness until the challenging final few kilometres. Co-operation lacking already in the break though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Hacecký attacks.

After the following counter-moves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Chaves emerged in the lead and is still leading with 10km to go. 22 seconds on his former companions, a further 3 minutes to the peloton.

When considering the combination of hill and mountain stat, these probably are the 7 strongest riders - and they quickly gain a minute's gap.

They are not however, the 7 best placed riders in GC (although all are in the Top 9). The highest placed rider missing is 6th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Rigoberto Úran, and he now rides off the peloton with former teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Frank Schleck following.

The other missing man from the GC Top 9 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Joseph Dombrowski. After a period of pulling the peloton, he decides it would be better use of effort to go alone, and attacks - meanwhile Uran has attacked away from Schleck.

At 3km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Chaves has been caught by the rest of the break. Their lead to the yellow jersey group is shortening, while Uran trails that group by 53 seconds. Then it is Schleck and Dombrowski, each solo, and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kolesnikov are attacking the peloton remains.

And up in the yellow jersey group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits reopens the attacks. Everyone follows, and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin leads the next acceleration as the breakaway suddenly come into view.

This brings a gap to the Euskaltel rider, as the break and yellow jersey group merge behind him!

But here comes the charge of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Pluchkin, looking to deny the dreams of the wildcard team to win another stage.

2nd for Lopez Garcia, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe picks up some bonus seconds for 3rd to slightly close the gap on Amador to 32 seconds. Amador was 5th ahead of Martin, Alarcon, Sicard, Velits and the rest of the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran lost ground as the group in front finished strongly, and ends with a 1'09 deficit - pretty much the gap that was there when he made his late move from the peloton. Schleck and Dombrowski come in at 1'32.

With the Top 9 riders in the race pulling further away, the battle for the last Top 10 spot is hotting up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Yonathan Monsalve makes a good gain today as he finishes alone, 1'57 behind.

Kolesnikov is next, and while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Valls, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Henao Montoya did attack late on, they were caught in the closing stages by Ji, Fothen, Talansky, Morton, Elissonde, Faiers, Kirsch and Preidler. Their gap? 2'31.

So now just 25 seconds separates Henao, Lecuisinier, Valls and Monsalve in the battle for 10th. There's a big 6 minute jump to Velits in 9th. Not a lot of change in that Top 9 although time loss for Dombrowski does allow Martin to move ahead of him to 7th - and almost go ahead of Uran too. The Colombian had looked good in the Pyrenees, but now leaves himself a lot more work to do in the Alps to try for a Top 5 position.

Pluchkin's win keeps him in the King of the Mountains lead - now with an 18 point lead over Zakarin. The gap to Bewley in the Points jersey has been halved now too, and it's looking tough for the Kiwi to hold on there. And Tinkoff outperformed Pendleton's today, and so move in to the teams classification lead.

Incidentally, all riders finished fine. Still no abandons from the race, as we enter the final 5 stages.
