A second consecutive hill stage, and this one looks considerably harder. It's a short one too, only 118km, so will that lead to some aggressive racing?

The stage starts in Monaco, but no time to hang around, as it is soon out into the hills. And certainly not hanging around are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Jelle Vanendert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Paolo Scarponi.

The presence of Klemme is particularly interesting, as one of the top hill riders in the race!

Pendleton's and Becherovka are keen to chase - with Sam Bewley amongst those relaying. Velits feeling good then, or is Bewley just after another stage win and really confident in his abilities?

Their time away was short lived, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png José Herrada attacked a little later, and went past them on a solo pursuit of the breakaway.

At the top of that climb, former KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Chamorro dashed the hopes of Scarponi by beating him to full points.

The pace so far has reduced the peloton to 86 riders. Looking at the riders dropped, there is a hint that this stage may suit mountain stat more than hill stat.

Putting that to the test is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski who launches an attack at around 10km to go on the final climb.

The break lead by 2 minutes and may be on for the stage, but there's a chance for time gains here. Alarcon, Pluchkin, Amador and Kolesnikov are the first to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Scarponi goes for the KoM points again - he will end up just 1 point behind Pluchkin - but is this also a move for the stage win? He is the best descender in the race, so have his companions made a mistake letting him go with just downhill left to the line?

Amador and Kolesnikov are next, then there's a small gap to Velits, Herrada, Martin, Sicard, Taaramae and Vanendert (dropped from the break). Uran, Fothen, Monsalve, Morton, Valls and Henao have also attacked.

Scarponi is holding onto his lead here. 25 seconds with 3km to go.

Even worse though for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier. Left in a slowing peloton, he is now almost 3 minutes behind that chasing group. His 10th overall may be at risk since he is the only rider in the GC Top 16 missing the move.

Back to the leaders, Chamorro, Sisira and Klemme are opening the sprint in an attempt to claw back Scarponi.

They do finish faster than the man from San Marino, but it's too late. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Paolo Scarponi takes the win! He always seems to be a reliable performer for Good Energy and has done it again.

Lecuisinier just fails to cling on to his 10th GC spot. He is replaced by Henao, but just 2 seconds separate them. Nearly 4 minutes lost on Dombrowski is big news for the U25 competition too.

With Novikov in the break and a strong Kolesnikov, Tinkoff take 5 minutes out of Pendleton's to move to just over a minute behind them in the Teams competition.
