We transition away from the mountains for a hill stage to Aurillac.

An uphill start made for a tough pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Aleksej Kunshin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png David López Garcia and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Maurits Lammertink made it into the first group and survived the climb.

But then Vesuvio swiftly changed their tactics, and sent pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Tom Jelte Slagter on the attack to join the breakaway.

Once there, he went chasing after King of the Mountains points.

They lead by 3 minutes with 52km to go atop the first Cat 2 climb of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Costagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Kruijswijk attacked for minor points - then kept going.

On the longer Cat 2 climb Slagter again looked set to take the points, which would have taken him to 2nd in the KoM competition. But he eased near the top and saw Kunshin and Lopez Garcia nip past him - so will have to settle for tied 2nd with Zakarin it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Pieter Serry rode a strong climb to leave his fellow attackers behind, catching up on the descent to make it a 5 man lead group.

Orange are all over the chase, cutting the gap to 1'30 with 20km to go.

But when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Laurent Pichon launched an attack, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Roux, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko, it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Vichot who joined the move for Orange - not Sicard.

But now that group is the one to trail the break by 1'30, with the peloton at 2 minutes. Slagter and Serry would appear to be the strongest in here as the final Cat 3 climb is reached, so it is a surprise that they do not follow the attack of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png López Garcia, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kunshin do.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png López Garcia summited the climb first at the front, while Kunshin picked up enough points to go into 2nd in the KoM standings.

Slagter and Serry trailed by 30 seconds but then Slagter dropped the Belgian on the descent, who is then joined by Lutsenko.

That peloton is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sam Bewley. Not because he wants a stage win, but because the peloton has been reduced to just 34 riders. Velits has made the cut, along with Pluchkin, Martin, Lecuisinier, Dombrowski, Uran, Valls and Monsalve.

But a minute down and leading the next group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe. Amador, Alarcon, Henao, Morton, Fothen, and Faiers all in there too.

Fighting for the stage win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Slagter is a great descender but the road flattened out just too soon for him. He can't quite cross the gap before fellow Dutchman pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Lammertink opens the sprint.

Can he lead out and win, or can Euskaltel grab a stage win as a wildcard? Nope, Tinkoff have proved very reliable at winning GT stages from breakaways, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Aleksej Kunshin sprints his way to a Tour de France stage win!

Slagter takes 4th, and Lutsenko 5th - but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Bewley wipes out the Sicard/Klemme group as he sprints to 6th to increase his Points lead a little.

The organisers decide not to award any significant time gaps. 4th placed Slagter is on 29 seconds, with the same time awarded to Costagli in 101st. A very lucky escape for some riders there!
