Tour de France - Stage 10
SportingNonsense
The Pyrenees have arrived! Pluchkin has all the confidence after winning the first mountain stage, on the back of his Vuelta triumph, so it is up to closest rivals Amador, Taaramae and Alarcon to put him under pressure today - and they will have plenty of opportunity to do so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg1.jpg

A break of 10 forms quickly:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Sergei Pomoshnikov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Tom Jelte Slagter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Jakub Kratochvila
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Eduard Alexander Beltran
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alex Ariya Destribois
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png David Rosch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Jonathan Hivert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Pieter Serry
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Tomohiro Kinoshita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Anthony Roux

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg2.jpg

Some interesting names in there, from breakaway danger Beltran to Vuelta KoM Pomoshnikov, to Rosch - who took out a Vuelta a Colombia mountain stage win last season.

Metinvest of course do much of the early pace setting but bizarrely doing a lot of work are the sprinters of Vesuvio. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Ben Swift and his leadout men Merino Criado and Van der Lijke doing work for some inexplicable reason. Particularly considering that Slagter is the best placed rider in the breakaway!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Johan Esteban Chaves has led the KoM competition for a few days now, but not being in the breakaway puts that under threat. Teammate Beltran does win the first Cat 3 climb of the day though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg4.jpg

The Tourmalet is our big HC climb of the day and 4km from the top marks the start of hostilities in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits at the forefront of attacks, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Pluchkin all over them. Soon joining them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Amador and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Valls scramble across to make it 11. (Technically 12 in this shot as they pass the struggling Roux). We almost see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Sørtveit almost accidentally join them, before falling back again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg5.jpg

They're up and away, quickly building 1-2 minutes on the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kolesnikov leads a 2nd 'wave' of riders setting off alone, each realising at different moments that they really need to go. There's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Morton, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Ji, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Talansky, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Cattaneo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg19.jpg

The big losers - and surprise absences - are South American duo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Henao Montoya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Monsalve. They go far too late with only a kilometre to the top of the Tourmalet - with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Faiers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fothen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kirsch having already gone in the mean time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg6.jpg

The gaps at the end of the Tourmalet descent say it all, as they have ended up 3 and a half minutes down and in real trouble. The later attacks havent found a way up to that main group of 11, who could all be seeing their Top 10 GC hopes shoot up - Valls and Lecuisinier particularly over-achieving here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg7.jpg

In the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Rosch has looked best on the Tourmalet, leading over the top. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Hivert made a move as soon as the final climb began, which Rosch would bridge up to - and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Pomoshnikov too.

With 7km to go, Rosch goes solo with a powerful move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg8.jpg

There's been attacks a plenty amongst the 11 man GC group too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon was first with still 18km to the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski leading the line of chasers, with everyone except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin counter-attacking. The Irishman was dropped but managed to make it back as the moves couldnt stick.

The first gaps to emerge came at the point where Rosch had attacked, 7km to go - no coincidence that this is soon after where the road really starts to steepen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski have got themselves a small advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg9.jpg

Pluchkin is quickly with them, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon looks to then launch a move from behind straight past that group - as he passes his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Destribois, the Laos national champion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg10.jpg

These moves are stringing out the group and first to drop is again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin, this time with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Valls.

The French duo are next to struggle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg11.jpg

But while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier is suffering, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard looks to fight back - along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran who is clinging on.

Into the final 5 kilometres and more of the breakaway are caught, including Slagter and Pomoshnikov who has been 2nd on the road. Had enough of following other moves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Pluchkin now makes his move in a killer acceleration that only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon is able to attempt to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Rosch is the only man left in front and his stage win hopes may be about to be dashed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg13.jpg

And yes, Pluchkin catches him with just over 1km to go - just as Alarcon clawas himself up to the Moldovan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe did his best to limit their gap to 40 seconds, but as those two duke it out for the stage win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran emerges as the strongest chaser inside the final kilometre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Jose Alarcon is able to hold off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Pluchkin in the sprint, to win the stage at Gavarnie-Gèdre-les-Espécière!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg16.jpg

Pluchkin's lead looks set to increase though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran in at 3rd in 27 seconds, then Taaramae, Rosch, Sicard and Amador at 37, Velits at 48.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg17.jpg

Like Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin paced himself back into contention to finish with Dombrowski at 1'02. Lecuisinier fell away to 2'27, Valls to 3'10, but both still making big gains on the rest.

Best of the rest was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kolesnikov with a hardy solo ride for a 4'13 deficit.

Failures of the day Monsalve and Henao came in with Morton, Ji and Talansky over 5 and a half minutes down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TdF/tgg18.jpg

Pluchkin's lead rises over the minute mark, with Taaramae still 2nd but now at 1'21, Alarcon up to 3rd at 1'43. The 11 man group that went away unsurprisingly now forms the overall Top 11.

KoM lead for Pluchkin, 6 points ahead of Alarcon; Dombrowski extended his U25 lead on Lecuisinier just as his team extend their teams classification advantage.
