The first hill stage of the race and we know the damage that these can do in GTs - although the ending of today's stage is not the hardest. Moves may have to come from further out.

Wildcard squad Grupo Nutresa have surely been waiting for this stage with Klemme as the joint best puncheur, but they also have a strong rider in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Johan Esteban Chaves, and he has joined the breakaway alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Steven Kruijswijk. The Colombian takes full points on the first two climbs.

Points down to 5th on the 2nd, Cat 2, climb. But competition leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Chamorro is sat back in the pack, chatting away to compatriot - and another Nutresa rider - Beltran.

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Pluchkin cruises over in 5th, picks up 2 points, and takes the competition lead!

After the intermediate sprint - won by Kruijswijk, to share the breakaway honours - an interesting mid-stage attack formed led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Scarponi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kunshin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Aasvold, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Herrada join in, and they bridge across to the breakaway.

This doesn't bother Chaves, who goes onto win the final climb anyway. This one gave even more points, being a Cat 1, and so it is he, not Pluchkin, who will move into the KoM lead.

There's a 3 minute lead for the break over the top, with 40km to go. But a very fast pace is laid down by Ayubowan, Orange and Metinvest down the descent, and at 25km to go they are already caught!

Martin and Sicard soon counter-attack, with Kinoshita, Lutsenko and Preidler trying the same as the 5km to go banner comes into view. Metinvest are keen to chase it down though, and here coming ominously into view is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Bewley!

Schleck is not letting up. Out of the saddle for a bit of a sprint as he enters the final 3km. Does the aging rider still have it in him?

Karnulin and Salinas have done what they could for the peloton, but still that gap remains as they too open up a sprint.

Final kilometre for Schleck! He does have 5 Tour stage wins to his name, but these were all the way back in 2008 and 2009 when he finished 1st and 2nd in GC. Is he going to add to that tally, 6 years later?

It's not in the bag yet, because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sam Bewley is absolutely flying. He has caught Sicard and Martin, and is riding so much faster than Schleck.
