The road to Bourg-en-bresse sees the return of the King of the Mountain sprints. 15 points are on offer, so the lead of Roux is not safe. And with the first actual mountain tomorrow, this is the last chance for Bewley to take the Maillot Jaune. To do that, he must finish in the Top 3 and also beat Swift.

9 go clear early on: Edmondson, Kinoshita, Lampaert, Oelerich, Bush, Vichot, Altur, Breen and Malori.

But again Paajanen, Aregger and Kolar don't want to let any move stick.

He wins the intermediate sprint too, before Edmondson and Vichot join him, and soon the rest of the move comes back together again, minus Oelerich and Lampaert.

But as the main climbing chunk of the stage starts, Venchi swap Aregger for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Sean De Bie and the Belgian chases the break down.

And that's it, no more attacks for the rest of the day - not even for the King of the Mountains sprints! Vesuvio roll over the first one and there is even a point for Ben Swift!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Pedro Merino Criado 'wins' both climbs to take him to 10 points and a joint lead with Roux! So as it stands, Vesuvio currently lead all classifications.

Merino Criado and Kittel trade relays for most of the day, with Swift also right at the front. Yet Bewley is much more hidden away in the pack - conserving more energy perhaps?

Venchi decide to lift the pace with around 25km to go, approaching the last couple of small hills of the day, with De Bie and Kruijswijk looking to make the other sprinters suffer a little - in favour of Van Stayen.

It causes a split, with 77 riders left behind. Some strong riders in there but no team leaders, and perhaps pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Kump as the strongest sprinter. Also in there is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Anthony Roux. He failed to defend his lead in the KoM classification today, despite having a great chance to do so, and the organisers have decided that Merino Criado should wear the jersey tomorrow.

A few more riders are dropped on that last climb, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Roman Maksimov.

Inside the final 10km, former winner of the race pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Frank Schleck is driving away on the front - with Pluchkin sat alert in 2nd wheel.

It doesn't seem a very wise move by Vesuvio, as Merino Criado is falling back in the peloton now, and can't fulfill his roll as 3rd man. Unfortunately as he fell back, sat firmly in his wheel were Van der Lijke and Swift! Only with 4km to go do they desperately try to get back to the front - surely too late?

Much less organisation today than in previous stages, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Van Avermaet is there to open up the sprint with 3km to go.

Degenkolb and Zabel follow Van Stayen. Kristoff, Guerao, Bouhanni, Guarnieri, Vanderbiest, Napolitano and Lo Cicero can be seen behind Bewley.

With 2.2km still to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Van Stayen already launches. Sensing an opportunity perhaps, with Bewley and Swift not so well placed?

Going so early is a gamble by Van Stayen, and having initially looked to be launching at the same time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb now slots into his slipstream.

And now into the lead inside the final kilometre, as Van Stayen looks to simply have provided a leadout to the 2 German sprinters in the race.

So close to a huge win for Zabel but he must settle for 2nd, with Degenkolb 3rd then Van Stayen and Kristoff. Guarnieri took 6th from those who were left behind, while Swift and Van der Lijke managed to fight their way through the pack for 7th and 8th.

Pluchkin, Taaramae and Martin all finish in the Top 13, and look in strong form ahead of tomorrow.
