To the states it is. Three riders make the break on a great day to be apart of it, with plenty of KOM points on offer and the undulating terrain perhaps playing to their favour. The break: Duran, Homrani & Swift-Metcalfe.
Lets not beat around the bush Homrani was comfortably the best at dealing with the hills of the trio. He would summit all KOM points first on the day to bag up 28 points. Duran, 14 points, couldn't match him. Only Kiserlovski and Chérel showed minor interest in the points out of the bunch.
Homrani, having long dropped the other breakaway riders, has 2'30 over the intact peloton as he crests the final climb with 31 KM to go. Could the GC be his aswell?
3 KM to go: The leader in sight.
Barta Pszczolarski RodrÃguez Parra Pozdnyakov Janiaczyk Cancellara Serebriakov Lavoine Forero Matthews Verschoor Kankovský Nateghi Sobota
Of the top sprinters only Mezgec is nowhere to be seen.
With the last of the break caught with 1 KM to go the sprint is on. Nateghi goes first ....
... and it looks to pay off. The Iranian has a small gap back to the rest once the final corner has been dealt with.
But with just 200 meters to go he is passed by those who had the sprint trains, whose teams were on the front all day. Serebriakov looks to be edging it.
But, in the dying meters, Lavoine comes around by inches to take the first stage. What a win, a great battle between the best. Serebriakov in 2nd, Forero to round out the podium. Surprise packages, Nateghi & Verschoor, round out the top 5.
Uphill work to meet the points jersey goal for Mezgec who finished 51st on the stage.
