Country number 3 for the race is Germany with the start of today in Freiburg, but it is just a brief visit. The intermediate sprint today is in Mulhouse, as we finally arrive in France. The first King of the Mountains jersey will also be awarded today.

formed the first move of the day. But Gallego Martin, Bush, Zepunkte, Breen and Malori all wanted to join them.

They could not, due to the work of 3 team domestiques: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Marcel Aregger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Michael Kolar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Paavo Paajanen. Taking it in turns, these 3 seemed determined to chase down all breakaway attempts today.

The break fought hard - with Puccio struggling in particular - and made it to Mulhouse for the sprint. A chance for them to extend an advantage as they fought out for the points: Roux from Hansen and O'Shea.

Puccio and Lammertink were dropped here and soon Altur too, as the break were forced to ride hard to hold off a fierce pace from those 3 chasing domestiques.

Onto the climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Daniel Schorn became the first rider to be dropped from the peloton this race, while we also had a first crash, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Danilo Napolitano unable to corner well uphill.

O'Shea and Hansen now paid for their efforts so far and were blown out of the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Anthony Roux clearly wants the King of the Mountains jersey but is now the lone survivor from the first move against the fresher legs of Gjølberg and David. The Kiwi is a particular threat, but Roux is able to come round him to win the climb.

Gjolberg can't regain contact and drops back to the peloton, now being led by Bouygues Telecom with the earlier crusaders now tired out. This could be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Rein Taaramäe last day in Yellow (for now) if Ben Swift finishes in the Top 2, but his team are happy to do the work nonetheless.

The breakaway duo of Roux and David made it to 10km to go, but not much further, and we will have a sprint.

After a shambles yesterday, Becherovka are much more organised today. Team leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits has the responsibility of guiding into position the train of Boivin, Vesely and Bewley.

Chaos as the lead out men begin their sprint. Van der Lijke goes right towards Becherovka, and Vesely goes left towards Vesuvio.

And this has worked out in the Czech squad's favour! Vesely leads from Bewley, while Swift has lost the wheel of Van der Lijke. It's not so good for Vanderbiest or Degenkolb either, who have lost ground - unlike Guarnieri.

That's the Maillot Jaune for the Brit, while Bewley takes 2nd, disappointed to have a lost out in a straight fight here. 3rd for Guarnieri ahead of Zabel and Vanderbiest. Venchi were never really in it so while Van Stayen takes 6th, the sprinters following their train could do no better. Guerao left it early and takes 7th from a distant Degenkolb. Maksimov and Bouhanni secure Top 10 finishes.
