The Tour opens with a 7km prologue around the Swiss capital of Bern. It is hilly rated, but theres only 0.8km metres climbed over the route, so it's not substantial hills on route today.
The leading specialists against the clock that are here are Marcel Kittel, Jesse Sergent, Tony Martin and Adrian Malori, and this could be the best chance they ever have to wear the Yellow jersey with the world's very best time triallists missing - including Fabian Cancellara, not here despite the Swiss location.
But hoping to break the hopes of the specialists are a number of the GC riders who hope for a flying start. Amongst these are Rein Taaramäe, Aleksandr Pluchkin, Rigoberto Úran and Andrei Amador.
First out of the start gate was Sergio Ortega, riding for one of the two wildcard teams Grupo Nutresa.
His time was quickly beaten by Jelle Vanendert, but after that those two remained at the top of the leaderboard for a while.
Looking to set the first real benchmark was Yoann Paillot and he took the lead by 7 seconds with a time of 9'45. He is also one of the top contenders for the White jersey today.
Ramunas Navardauskas finished one second short, as did Paillot's teammate Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier.
Tony Martin ended the reign of Paillot with a new best time of 9'39.
Soon after Frank Schleck joined Domenik Klemme in going 19 seconds slower than Martin. As the best two puncheurs in this race, this just proves that this route is actually kinda flat.
Adrian Malori moves into 2nd place, 3 seconds down.
A couple of GC contenders went out in the middle of the day. Both Peter Velits and Markus Fothen post a time that is 6 seconds behind Martin.
Jesse Sergent is the next contender, and he finishes on the same time as Tony Martin. Not quite the same time though, he is slightly slower, and will be disappointed to have only gone 2nd.
Could Marcel Kittel do better? Yes, he takes the lead, 1 second faster than Martin!
The very next rider was Mattia Cattaneo. He goes Top 10 for now, 8 seconds down - but is 1 second slower than Yoann Paillot, so the Frenchman is the fastest Under 25 rider today.
The time trial specialists are all out of the way now with Kittel the fastest of them. But now up to challenge the German champion are national champions from Colombia, Costa Rica and Estonia.
Rigoberto Úran rides to 4th place, at 3 seconds.
Andrei Amador is faster, setting the same time as Martin and Sergent, but marginally slower than both of them - so 4th place it is.
Rein Taaramäe has stormed around the course, and used those few hills to his advantage. He takes the lead, beating Kittel by a whole 7 seconds!
Aleksandr Pluchkin is perhaps the only rider who can beat him, but he cannot. 6 seconds slower is enough for 2nd place, and that will have to do for the Moldovan.
The final GC rider today is Romain Sicard and he takes a Top 10 finish, with 9th place at 11 seconds.
The last 3 riders today were sprinters Guarnieri, Swift and Bewley. This may be a prologue but the results of the sprinters show that it was time trial stat that mattered most. Bewley and Swift were the only sprinters to finish in the Top 100 today, with Bewley at 25 seconds and Swift at 32. With 4 flat stages to come, neither can move into Yellow after one day - but it is certainly a possibility by the end of Stage 5.
Today though, the Maillot Jaune goes onto the shoulders of Rein Taaramäe after a hugely impressive ride.
