The Tour d'Andorra concludes with the queen stage: 198km in total - with 85km of climbing (accumulated height gained: 7000m)! The 'Col d'Ordino' (15km, 6%) has to be climbed four times. Also: KoM, anyone?
Machado took his second stage-win yesterday. Leading by 53" on Keizer, he's surely the favorite again. But of course anything can happen on such a brutal profile.
Really anything? Yes indeed:
Intxausti (GC's 18th, + 9.41 - KoM 12pts)
Parra Bustamante
Ruijgh
Ardila Cano (GC + 18.25)
Topchanyuk (GC's 26th, + 11.43 - KoM 25pts)
Pantano Gómez
Niyonshuti
Serrano
build the break of the day! Intxausti, yap. That's definitely a stunning move from the Spaniard, who struggled so hard here.
Intxausti and Ardila Cano dropped their breakaway companions already halfway through the stage, where they also established a huge gap on the peloton, that didn't yet start to chase it seems.
Intxausti also battling for the mountain sprints and he's already taking over the provisional lead with still four sprints to come. And he keeps pacing now that it's just 46km to go:
Ardila Cano couldn't follow anymore, he's already more than two minutes behind the new solo-leader. The pack is 20 minutes (!) in arrears at this point!
30km to go for the peloton now and the GC-contenders finally took over the chase by themselves. This causes major splits and the bunch goes into pieces. All early escapees except of Cano and Intxausti have been caught in the meantime:
Machado
Keizer
Van den Broeck
Rujano
Contador
Marquez
Abal
Nerz
Brajkovic
build a new first group of favorites, that is still 17 minutes behind Intxausti (who has just 18km to go)!
A next group with GC-contenders is a minute behind now:
Sella
Eastman
Lövkvist
Valls
Panayotov
Hacecký
Quintana
Will Intxausti really attack the GC-lead here? He's still ahead by 14 minutes and just 18km to go for the first chasing group:
GC's 2nd Keizer now attacking and he opens up a 32"-gap on group Machado quickly! It's the final downhill sector before we enter the final climb..
10km to go for group Machado, that struggles to keep up with Keizer, who's already 1'40" ahead!
Intxausti now losing ground quickly, but he's still 11 minutes ahead of Machado. Cano 3 minutes ahead of Keizer.
Valls 1'20" behind Machado, Eastman further two minutes, Panayotov/Sella another minute..
Keizer keeps pacing with some impressive speed, as he goes past Ardila Cano about 6km before finish. He's now just 5 minutes behind Intxausti and keeps narrowing this gap!
Even more important: group Machado loses more and more time, now more than two minutes behind Keizer!
At least Intxausti ain't no real threat for the big guns anymore, as his gap is down to 5 minutes on group Machado with now less than 4km to go:
Brajkovic and Rujano now struggling, losing contact to Machado, VDB, Conta, Marquez and Nerz!
Ardila Cano suffering for obvious reasons, Valls still chasing solo about 2 minutes in arrears though..
Intxausti can already celebrate his stage-win now! What a move. He couldn't keep his pace in this final climb, but it's still enough to take the stage (and polka dot) at least!
+ 29" Keizer
An impressive ride and given the latest gaps, this may be the GC-victory for him!
+ 2'42" for group Machado
Contador, Abal, Van den Broeck, Marquez and Nerz also avoided a heavy time loss on Intxausti that way..
+ 3'21" Rujano
+ 3'33" Brajkovic
Rujano again suffering today..
+ 4'14" Valls
+ 7'25" Eastman
+ 8'18" for a group with Panayotov and Sella
Heavy losses for Quintana (+ 18.57) and Hacecký (21.20), who will drop down the GC on this final day!
Also a long list of DNFs, the first in five days here..
Keizer though did everything right here and thanks to a phenominal performance today, he takes the overall victory! No one could counter his move on the final descent and he kept pacing then.
Machado (+ 1.34) as 2nd ahead of Van den Broeck. Both should be pleased with a podium here. Machado enjoyed a great race with two stage-wins.
Contador going past Rujano, who completes the Top-5 ahead of Marquez, Valls, Brajkovic, Abal and Intxausti! The latter looked like a real threat for most of today's stage, but given his problems here, this Top-10 result should really do eventually.
Nerz, Panayotov, Sella, Eastman and Hirschlein then rounding up the Top-15. Nerz with a strong performance today, while Sella definitely had his problems here.
Machado with a well deserved win in the points competition (96pts), where Keizer (85) and Intxausti (68) complete the Top-3. Intxausti collected most of his points towards the KoM-competition today and that's the polka dot then. Cano 2nd ahead of Topchanyuk.
Eastman best young rider, Euskaltel best team.. Another entertaining edition of this brutal stage-race. The big guns delivered, even though it took a breakaway attempt for Intxausti to finally do something right this year..
