Criterium du Dauphine Libere - Stage 7
ember
The report is written by Gustavovskiy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/s7prof.png

Mont Ventoux! That pretty much describes the whole stage we have in front for today. 170km with only two cat. 4 climbs along the way will lead us to one of the most iconic climbs of the world of professional cycling. Plenty of disputes are taking their place on that mountain, so let’s waste no time and get on with the business

The weather is pretty cloudy, but that doesn’t deter 10 fearless riders to form our breakaway group:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fraile
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Boom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Hughes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Pardilla
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Pichon
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Izagirre
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Jiao
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Laengen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Blikra
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Salinas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-1.png

They build a 5min gap, which decreases to about 2’30 before the last cat. 4 climb. Surprisingly 4 others riders decide to attack at that point: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Gonçalves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kolar and Le Bon

This goes nowhere though.
The breakaway group passes the that penultimate climb almost intact, with only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Fraile suffering a bit at the back (the Spaniard was surely interested in the Kom prize, but exhaustion took the better of him)

Meanwhile back in the peloton a huge surprise happens! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Rein Taramaae attacks in the descent before the Ventoux! The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Vesuvio men are not particularly well positioned, but this is extremely unorthodox!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-2.png

A group of eleven forms, containing:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taramaae
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Kohl
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.pngElissonde
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.pngGuldhammer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.pngShikai
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.pngKennaugh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Konig
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Le Bon
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Grivko
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kolar

So, not the most high profile group, but it certainly works, at least for now, as they gain a 1min advantage as soon as they hit the first slopes of the Mont Ventoux. The early escapes can be found two minutes up front. It’s all uphill from now on!

Things calm down a bit later as the panicking conjoined effort of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Orange and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Vesuvio manages to catch the adventurous group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-3.png

Or maybe not… instead of merging into each other, the peloton only absorbs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Le Bon and let go of the others. As the gap reappears pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Suaza bridge up to the yellow jersey group.

With 12km to go this complicate even further, as all 3 groups seem to be uniting into one huge blob. However, it looks like the yellow jersey is accelerating again past the early escapees with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Suaza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche on his wheel, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Gesink command the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-4.png

Indeed after insisting a little more, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taramaae succeeds in achieving a gap to everyone else. On the other hand, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck continues to overtake the early breakaway, some of them actually delay him. He looks pretty fresh though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-5.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Vasyliv was the only rider in the top20 having lost contact at this point, but we’re only half way through.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck’s tempo sees him link up to his team mate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche who had meanwhile found a gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Guldhammer seems to be reaching his limit and gets dropped alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Blikra. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Gesink has gone on the offensive as well and tries to reach these men. Chasing him is a group of 6 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Pozzovivo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Ratyi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Keizer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Brandle feature in a 31 men group one minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-6.png

We’re almost within the last 5km, when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck goes on the offensive!! He claws back a few more seconds, but the leader still has 40’’ on him. Someone who’s having a tremendous day is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche, who’s still able to follow the Luxembourgian!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-7.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Gesink has linked up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Guldhammer who’s 40’’ behind Suaza. While behind everything seems to have stabilized.

We finally reach the barriers zone with 3km to the line, when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taramaae finally gets some company. But it’s a very uncomfortable one, named pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Andy Schleck, who has the psychological upper side now, but still has to make up for his 36’’ deficit in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-8.png

We have news of an attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Faiers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Brandle at the back, but all the action is happening at the front.

After a couple of kms of nervous pacing, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taramaae sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck alongside him as they enter the last km. He knows that he can’t afford to give him any space here…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-9.png

But the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Vesuvio’s leader shows why he is the very best in this sort of stages and accelerates past the Estonian to claim a monumental victory. A gritty stage for him, after having to claw back the difference achieved by his audacious rival, certainly one to remember!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-10.png

He managed to create a gap of a few meters to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taramaae, but the clock only counted 9’’, so… it’s close but no cigar for the Luxembourgian, as the current leader gets to keep his jersey to the last stage with an advantage of 19’’ in the GC for his most direct rival.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Suaza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche finish 3rd and 4th in two magnificent performances, 1’30 later. The Irish still has the last stage to shine and perhaps even climbing in the GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Gesink takes 5th, 2’36 behind the winner in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Guldhammer and an amazing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Blikra. The next group actually comes pretty close to this with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Wellens overtaking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Keizer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Ratyi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Pozzovivo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Dauphine/7-11.png

Unlike the first mountain stage, there were no abandons today.
