Giro del Capo - Stage 2

Next flat stage, again a tricky profile: an undulating route, featuring a circuit around Durbanville.

Crosswinds around 30-35kmh could do some damage as well, while Serebriakov/Pozdnyakov looked so strong yesterday, that both should be amongst the best again.

Two riders are allowed to go for the break of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Petrovski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Hansen

Hansen takes the first of three intermediate sprints, but as the wind goes up to 40kmh, we see the duo's gap getting smaller with still more than 75km to go..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_002.jpg

..and here's the reason for that: Novatek went for quite a brutal pace and not only are the two escapees swallowed with still 71km remaining, there's also a major split in the pack!

Just 21 riders in a new leading group now, with a lot of Novatek, Fred Whitton, Chernobyl and In-n-Out riders. The dropped bunch is down by two minutes at this point, where we see a tough pace with the second intermediate sprint ahead:

Sprint #2: Serebriakov - Abdallah - Meyer (valuable bonifications for the man in yellow)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_003.jpg

Panic mode for those other teams back in the peloton though! Fablok and Severstal doing most of the work to limit the losses, but there's still a 2-minutes-gap with now 44km left. Will we see some unexpected drama today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_004.jpg

No yet. A few moments later, the leading group stopped working and that's good news for all other teams caught in the split. 30km before finish, the field is back together. It seems like those three or four teams in the leading group didn't want to keep this going..

Sprint #3: Serebriakov - Buts - Abdallah (Serebriakov keeps collecting bonus seconds)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_005.jpg

No more action in the final lap and so we see the bunch sprint being kicked off:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png De Maar

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_006.jpg

Pozdnyakov again with an early kick, opening up a small gap on Serebriakov!

Briggs/Meyer hanging on, Sweeting moving forward with Abdallah struggling to follow.. quite a gap on the further riders, so this may be those challenging for the win..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_007.jpg

And Pozdnyakov with a super strong sprint so far! Serebriakov can't hang on with his teammate. Meyer and Sweeting not too far behind..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_008.jpg

Huge gaps! Pozdnyakov leading, Meyer now with a strong kick to go past Serebriakov.. Sweeting can't follow though..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_009.jpg

..and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/npn.png Pozdnyakov holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fwt.png Meyer to go for a dominating stage-win! He looks in best shape, going for 2-1 in the two first stages..

..but where's the man in yellow?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Capo/MG15_Capo_2_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Omarsson (out of nowhere) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png De Maar deny pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/npn.png Serebriakov minor bonifications, as he ends up 5th on the stage. Another strong performance from his team though.

And that's actually some good news for Novatek:

Pozdnyakov moves up to 1st in the GC (thanks to the better stage placements only)! With the first hilly stage ahead, he should be considered a real threat for another stage win at least. Abdallah 3rd ahead of Meyer, while Omarsson went for some valuable bonifications today.

Serebriakov remains the points-leader thanks to those intermediate sprints today.
