We're heading for the mountains again and start with a hilly rated, but quite mountainous stage today. Flat finish, but definitely a challenging profile.

Tenorio with a rather narrow lead on Pluchkin. Will he hold on til the end? Strong puncheurs like Cunego or Gesink may aim for today's stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Swift takes the opportunity of an early intermediate sprint to grab valuable points. Vesuvio didn't allow anyone to go clear and that's smart enough.

There's also bad news for the team though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Suaza (47th in the GC) quits the race with a fractured thigh. He hadn't exactly a good Vuelta anyway, but it's never good to see a rider forced to quit with an injury.

Several riders then went to attack the peloton and Keinath amongst those (also taking the first Cat1 mountain sprint that way). A group of 6 riders builds the breakaway then:

Two quite strong climbers and Top-20 contenders with an early move. And Vuillermoz obviously attacking the KoM today!

Halfway through the stage, we see a nasty crash in the pack: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png König go down in the barriers!

Both will be brought back to the pack quickly (with a rather slow pace overall, as the breakaway leads by 9 minutes with 72km left), but we may have to see, whether Phinney (7th in the GC) will be effected in a way.

Back to the front of the race, where Vuillermoz indeed took over the provisional KoM-lead, as the early break would also cross the final mountain still with a comfortable gap of 7 minutes! Keinath and Wellens will definitely improve in the GC that way.

De la Cruz and Keinath attack the group close to the mountaintop (13km left) and open up a gap quickly!

About seven minutes later, we see also the first GC-contenders attacking at the same point! 12 riders going clear from the pack - the GC's Top-12 actually:

Pozzovivo, Cunego, Pluchkin, Gesink, Amador, Kritskiy, Abal, Tenorio, Dekker, Lecuisinier, Monsalve and also Phinney as the last one to join this group!

The stage will go to those escapees though and De le Cruz dropped Keinath on the descend! Wellens now with an attempt to bridge across the solo-leader, whith Keinath and Flügel struggling to follow..

20"-advantage for De la Cruz with less than 4km remaining..

Quite an action-packed race now, as Gesink and Amador try to jump behind Cunego with 5km left!

Cunego 40" ahead of the duo, that is like 16" ahead of group Tenorio/Pluchkin.. the peloton (49 riders) further two minutes in arrears..

So it's Cunego gaining a minute today, moving up to 7th. Wellens moving up to 14th, Keinath 16th, Vuillermoz 17th and De la Cruz 19th. A great day for the latter two in particular.

In addition to the already mentioned Suaza, three more riders DNF today. Check their names below.
