And we're heading for the mountains again: the most challenging profile so far, coming at 211km in total and featuring several climbs across the route. Two crucial climbs in the final quarter of the stage then.

Tenorio and Pluchkin may battle for the leader shirt today, but of course we do have several threats with Amador, Cunego and Gesink in particular. Phinney looked strong(er) in the past two days and will aim to re-enter the Top-5 soon.

A group of 10 riders (later joined Dyrnes) goes clear from the pack quickly and so have those names in the break today:

Hivert and Vuillermoz would be those battling for the mountain sprints with the best efforts and as we now enter the final third of the race, Hivert (53) and Vuillermoz (51) already went past KoM-leader Roux (39) with one more Cat1 climb to come.

60km before finish (third to last climb) now and a group of 7 riders attacks the peloton, that is down by 4 minutes on the early break:

On the penultimate climb (33km left), this latest attackers haven't yet closed up to the early break (where Dyrnes and Kung already got dropped)..

..back in the peloton (down by 2 minutes on the leading group), we now see the first serious GC-contenders attacking:

The remaining early break reaches the mountain-top first, and Hivert grows his new KoM-lead:

On the short downhill sector, the race settles down for a few minutes and the chasing groups merge to one big 19-men-group that is just 45" behind the early break (7 riders left)!

A few notable names couldn't yet join this group with Tenorio though..

10km left and group Tenorio has reeled in the early escapees. The action is on again, as we see Pluchkin (and Pozzovivo) trying to go clear from the new leading group!

Pozzovivo failed, but Pluchkin opened up a 30"-gap with now less than 5km remaining! Some pressure on Tenorio now, where we see the bigger group going into pieces:

Cunego/Lecuisinier another minute behind!

Monsalve struggling now, while Kritskiy looks finally stronger in the mountains..

1.5km left and Pluchkin holds on to his 28"-advantage, with group Tenorio going with the same pace.. Group Gesink/Guldhammer now 56" behind Tenorio, so Gesink in danger to lose his 3rd in the GC!

Just a few hundred metres to go and Pluchkin now struggling to hold off the chasing group! Amador and Dekker kick off the finishing sprint and put some pressure on Pluchkin that way..

Quite a shocking result for Cunego, who looked so strong in the first week here.. he will surely drop some places today:

Pluchkin now 37" behind still leading Tenorio. This may become a thrilling fight for the GC-victory here! Amador moving up to 3rd (2.50) ahead of Gesink (3.08) and Abal (3.56).

Phinney (8.20) actually moving up to 7th, as Cunego drops to 8th (8.44)! Kritskiy up to 11th (12.12) and putting pressure on Pozzovivo (11.08) that way.
