Olympia's Tour - Stage 1

Instead of a prologue, the Olympia's Tour kicks off with a key stage this year: today's 17km ITT will be the big chance for the specialists to gain time on the sprinters.

Fiedler as the clear favorite, with 2013-winner Cornu, Van Winden, Schädlich, Reus and Stannard as his biggest contenders.

Crosswinds (about 30kmh) make for tricky conditions, but except of some very early starters, it's the same conditions for quite a while now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Meier surprisingly sets a first notable best time, beating guys like Salas/Grabovski (21 seconds) or Steensen by quite a margin!

The Canadian also went for the provisional best split time, even though the next three starters came shortly after him:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Van Winden finishes the course 6" off Meier!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Schädlich slightly better with 5" lost!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Stannard provisional 4th at the finish, 13" slower than Meier!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Cornu next favorite on the road and he looks promising with already 18 seconds gained on Meier at the split:

the Belgian also sets the best time at the finish, beating Meier by 37 seconds eventually!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aks.png Bontenackels comes up with another surprise then:

+ 31" as provisional 2nd at the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Dennis just 10 seconds off at the split and therefore much stronger than his teammate Stannard - finishing the parcours off with another notable surprise:

+ 24" as new 2nd, beating Stannard by 26 seconds!

Dumoulin in the same range as Schädlich, a strong Erviti and Barth with provisional Top-10s at this point..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Olympia/MG15_Olympia_1_008.jpg

A few more promising riders like Haugard (43 seconds), Dempster (49), Balloni (50), Boom (56) or Flens (1.02 minutes) then clearly missing out on Cornu's leading time - all finishing inside the Top-20 though (except of Flens).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Reus enjoyed a nice race last year (as 3rd overall) and looks promising at the first split (15 seconds behind).. the local favorite won't make today's podium though:

+ 31" to finish slightly worse than Bontenackles and Dennis!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Olympia/MG15_Olympia_1_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler as the last threat for Cornu now (and last rider on the road, too). The German surely wants to avoid any unexpected losses today and goes strong at the first split:

4 seconds slower than Cornu - and we do notice the wind going up to 40kmh now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Olympia/MG15_Olympia_1_010.jpg

It's a thrilling battle anyway and Fiedler crosses the line together with Ciolek:

+ 7" to finish the stage as 2nd! No disaster, but of course he expected to win this.

Speaking of Ciolek, we may leave a short note on the sprinters and their significant losses today:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Kupfernagel + 1'38" as 53rd on the stage
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Groenewegen + 1'47"
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Ahlstrand + 2'23"
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Vantomme + 2'34"
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Ciolek + 2'51"
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Guillén + 3'19" as 130th and last

So while Cornu slips into yellow, we see guys like Ciolek and Vantomme quite far behind already. Kupfernagel and Groenewegen, however, did quite well for their standards. Given the slightly stronger crosswinds for the last 10 riders (or so), this might have been a factor.
