Second consecutive mountain stage with a challenging finish on Alto Hazallanas, featuring two steep climbs in the final quarter of this 170km parcours.

Phinney looked strong yesterday and defended the GC-lead easily. Will Pluchkin, Tenorio or Amador do better today? And how about Gesink or Kritskiy, who definitely have to bounce back from quite a disastrous stage yesterday?

Not four, but five riders build the break of the day, going clear from the pack early into the stage:

We're jumping straight into the final 35km, where the peloton now enters the penultimate climb with a 3-minutes-disadvantage on the early break:

attack the pack at the bottom of the climb! All of those names already lost big minutes in the previous days.

Except of Shikai, all of them catch up to the early break quickly and are soon to pass the top of this climb now.

We see another - definitely serious - attack out of the peloton:

Gesink quickly established a minutes-gap on the pack, where several more GC-contenders launch their first moves with still 28km remaining:

Amador, Monsalve, Abal, Pluchkin and Dekker as the first to go - with riders like Pozzovivo, Lecuisinier, Cunego, Monsalve, Pinot, Guldhammer or Tenorio jumping behind immediately!

And those latest attacks indeed succeeded, as those 10-12 riders opened up quite a huge gap on the peloton quickly.

As we now enter the final downhill sector, we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Phinney in serious troubles! The race leader couldn't join those attacks and clearly hasn't his best day, sitting somewhere in the bunch - already 4 (!) minutes down on group Tenorio/Pluchkin!

That ain't looking good for the US boy..

Cunego with support from Shikai, trying to join the chasing group. Also Dekker did struggle so far, but may be able to close this gap..

Tenorio, Pluchkin and Amador attacked the chasing group a few moments later - quickly joining the leading group with now 8.5km remaining!

Gesink and Van der Velde with a smart move then, trying to escape from this group now! Gesink definitely with some aggressive racing today..

Dekker caught up to group Monsalve/Guldhammer/Pozzovivo and also Cunego has almost made it!

Van der Velde made his work for Gesink, who's now entering the final climb (6km left) leading solo by 20 seconds on the next group with Tenorio/Pluchkin!

Group Dekker is further 2 minutes behind already.. where's Phinney though?

The GC leader finally shows some will to drop the peloton, but he's way behind the leading groups: 9 minutes, to be precisive!

Only a miracle could prevent him from losing the red jersey today...

4km left and Gesink established a 57"-gap in the meantime! Tenorio, Pluchkin, Amador and Abal now forming the first chasing group..

Group Ratiy/Kohl can't follow anymore, but they are still a few seconds ahead of group Dekker/Cunego/Pozzovivo/Monsalve..

Valverde being dropped and losing minutes already.

Ratiy, Kohl, Kolesnikov fighting strong and then there's some splits in the chasing groups: Monsalve, Cunego and Guldhammer dropping Pozzovivo, Dekker, Pinot and Lecuisinier!

GC's 4th Cunego now also attacking Monsalve and Guldhammer, quickly opening up a gap! He's still a minute behind Pluchkin, but given his earlier troubles today, this is a notable move now..

Quite a shake-up in the GC today: Tenorio moving up to 1st with 39" on Pluchkin and 1'16" on Gesink, who goes up to 3rd! Cunego, Amador, Abal and also Dekker all going past Phinney, who drops to 8th in the GC with more than 5 minutes on Tenorio now!

Guldhammer and Pozzovivo completing the Top-10 ahead of Lecuisinier and Monsalve.. Keinath dropping to 14th ahead of Kristkiy. Contador again struggling and sitting on 22nd. Valverde quite strong as 13th so far.
