The second week kicks off with the first mountain stage up Mont Caro. A tough summit finish in a classical __/ stage.

Phinney with the pressure to defend his lead, with better climbers like Pluchkin, Tenorio or Amador surely aiming to gain back the time, they lost in the timetrial.

De la Cruz as the best placed in the GC with already 10 minutes lost on Phinney though..

The break built a lead up to 4 minutes, which would then slowly decrease. Strange enough though, as the peloton slows down close to the finishing climb, growing the gap back to 5'30" with just 14km to go!

Tenorio would then be the first to initiate the first wave of attacks, as a group of 5 riders went clear from the pack early in the climb:

establish a minutes gap quickly, with some more GC-contenders trying to jump behind with now about 12km left for this group of favorites..

The early break still leading by 4 minutes on group Phinney/Pluchkin/Tenorio and we now see this next chasing group shaping up. 7 riders facing a 54"-gap on Phinney and leading by more than a minute on the bunch now:

For the overview: quite some gaps between the group of favorites and surely Gesink with the most disastrous performance so far. This will be some tough challenge to limit his losses today!

In the meantime, Pomoshnikov dropped his former breakaway companions to enter the final 5km solo - leading by 54" on Haig/Flügel!

Group Phinney still about 4 minutes in arrears, so it looks like Pomoshnikov (+ 12'13 in the GC) can take this first mountain stage..

Less than 5km to go for the chasing groups and Amador catches up to MOnsalve, who's been dropped by group Dekker/Abal!

Also Guldhammer/Scarponi struggle to keep this group's pace, while Phinney/Pluchkin/Tenorio are still about a minute ahead of group Dekker..

Gesink now catching up to Valverde, who's been dropped by Amador. The Dutchman is fighting, but he's still a minute behind Monsalve, who couldn't hang on with Amador!

Kritskiy 15" behind Gesink, Contador additional 13" in arrears now.. those three are likely to lose quite some time here..

While Pomoshnikov is still leading solo and going strong towards the stage-win (despite losing some ground on the favorites), group Phinney maintains it's minutes-gap on the next chasing group with now just 2km left:

Haig/Flügel and De la Cruz more and more suffer and their gap is melting down quickly with Tenorio trying to launch another attack (followed by all others in this group)..

Dekker, Abal, Pozzovivo and Lecuisinier half a minute ahead of Amador/Guldhammer and a strong fighting Scarponi, while Monsalve really suffers now!

The final kilometre and Phinney attacks the first group of favorites, that reeled in the remaining early escapees in the meantime..

Amador with a huge fight on the final km to at least catch up to the second chasing group eventually!

Gesink and Contador clearly went too late and couldn't make up those lost minutes early in the climb. Monsalve really suffered once he got dropped from the second chasing group.. quite an interesting stage with those rather huge gaps early into the climb, which more or less stood the same til the finish.

So, for the GC now:

Phinney defending his lead, as alread said. Tenorio, Cunego and Pluchkin still about 2 minutes down in the GC. Dekker, Abal and Amador within 3-4 minutes then. A strong Keinath moving up to 8th ahead of a disappointing Gesink.

Pozzovivo, Guldhammer and Lecuisinier probably fighting for a Top-10, where Kristkiy and Monsalve will need to gain 2 minutes now.. Contador already lost minutes earlier on and finds himself on 23rd now.
