Second hilly stage on Mallorca, featuring the most challenging climb so far: a not too steep, but quite long Cat1-climb in the final third of the stage.

Phinney as the new GC-leader, but Cunego already attacked two days ago. Will the veteran try again? Also Gesink may take this opportunity to attack the less strong puncheurs.

Opposing to the first hilly stage two days ago, the peloton looks in better control of the breakaway: as we enter the longest climb (11km), the bunch (led by Swisscom and Metinvest) is just a minute in arrears.

Will we see serious attacks with still 27km remaining?

24km before finish (7km to the mountain top), we see 4 more riders on the move (just when the early break has been reeled in):

try to escape from the bunch! Valverde (+ 4.35) as their best placed in the GC, so maybe no real GC-threat in this attacking group?!

This may be the reason for the pack taking things a bit easy in the meantime: the 4-men-group established a 2'50"-gap quickly and looks set to fight for line honours..

..that said, only Scarponi does! The climber drops his companions quite easily and goes for 8km solo attempt now!

This new chasing group opens up a 53"-gap on the bunch quickly, so we might have seen a crucial move here!

Anyway, just 3.5km left now and group Cunego/Gesink (20 seconds) will fight hard to at least gain a few seconds..

Phinney, Tenorio and Gesink on the podium. Gesink climbing a bit and so did Cunego as 8th. Valverde as the biggest winner, jumping onto 9th. Abal dropping down to 6th, Kritskiy to 17th.
