has anyone ever succeded to work with heightmaps when no DEM files are available (e.g. northern scandinavia) ?
I'm facing two problems:
(1) The scale of heigtmap region to pcm is completely wrong, large mountains become small hills in the stage editor. I can of course increase the image resolution, but soon the heightmap images become extremely large...
Is there a way to change the resolution (pixel per km), and does someone know the actual resolution used?
(2) I cannot get the necessary height for mountains (even relatively small mountains topping around 1000m above sea level), they all end up as small hills, even though mountain tops are white and valleys black.
Any help would be great. If there is another way to make stages in 'unsupported' regions is also welcome (other than starting with an empty map maybe :))
about heightmaps, unfortunatly, Cyanide never answered me about this bug editor ! More precisely the editor doesn't translate correctly the format .TGA which contains color values from black 0 to white 255 :
Black 0 = 0 meter, White 255 = 8500 m, between the both shade of gray = differents heights from 1 to 254.
I explained it there in French, it was for PCM 2013 but as you see nothing done since this time from Cyanide :
To resume, you could only get height of 255m maximum. You could do a simple test in building a TGA file then add on it 3 squares with one Black, one Grey, also one White and observe which height you will obtain. I don't still play on PCM 2015 but I guess no patch still was done to finish to develop the TGA translate Heighmap Editor...Tell us if it's still the same results on PCM 2015 ?
I built a race in Bolivia below, in fact I used a TGA file from Bolivia that I built from DEM and I used the tool to grow up inside the Editor. Sure, is not at all the real relief in doing this way but until Cyanide doesn't want to answer us about it, nothing else could be done.
