Vuelta a España - Stage 2

Another rather easy flat stage, which features the first mountain sprint though.

Mohs and Swift as yesterday's strongest in a tight sprint. Lo Cicero, Van Avermaet and Tzortzakis obviously amongst the favorites again.

It took again a while until a first breakaway group is allowed to establish a gap and it's again 4 riders going for the break of the day then:

Edmondson takes the first, Borges today's second intermediate sprint..

Quite tricky conditions today (28kmh crosswinds and the peloton chasing rather hard) and the first downhill sector sees it's first victim:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png König went down with a crash 47km before finish! His team's GC-rider is quickly back on the bike and Sagan, Cisse, Hnik desperately try to bring him back into the pack. An unlucky moment to go down.

Still 35km remaining and the peloton kept going with a high pace, yet reducing the gap on the break to just 35 seconds!

Borges takes the only mountain sprint anyway, so he will be the first KoM-leader in the Vuelta this year..

Both the wind (15-30kmh) and the relatively hard chasing sprinter teams (Vesuvio, Pokerstars, Quickstep) make for a tough race today and we see a major split after this short climb here:

70 riders being dropped by 2 minutes and that's bad news for König, who caught up to the bunch, but who's of course caught in the wrong side of the split. He's not the only one facing a tough challenge for the final 30km:

Suaza as the most notable climber/GC-contender, Van Garderen/Flügel as those, who might have hoped to battle for the leader shirt in the first hilly stage.. and of course three notable sprinters there!

Those dropped group would indeed struggle to make it back to the main peloton and so it will be all about limiting the losses. Same goes for a few more names, who suffer big time at the very end of the leading pack:

Still way more than kilometre to go and Goss with an early kick now! Howard and Zabel behind him, Mohs quite early all alone in the wind, too.

Behind Roelandts, there's already a small gap on Tzortzakis/Guardini..

Mohs totally empty and losing big time - and we haven't even entered the final km now!

Swift joined the leading trio, where Goss also suffers from his early kick..

Lo Cicero though struggles just like Mohs and also Roelandts loses ground quickl, as we see a few GC-contenders like Dekker, Pluchkin and Cunego moving forward!

Those won't fight for line honours though, as Swift opened up a huge gap on Zabel and Howard!

The Aussie getting slower, but fighting to hold off Avermaet, Tzortzakis, Pluchkin, Vanderbiest, Dekker, Cunego and also Phinney!
