Stage 5, the final stage of the race, looks like a relatively straightforward day apart from two early cobbled climbs. If those are negotiated successfully we should be set for another finish dominated by the sprinters. The favourites are the sprinters who are also decent on the cobbles - Boonen, Cavendish and Vantomme.
We have high winds today, which could cause echelons later on in the day as the pace picks up. For now though thought he pace is relatively low, allowing a group of 9 riders to go off the front forming the breakaway.
Hadi
Hofland
Feiereisen
Coronel
Duchesne
Kneisky
Allonca
Formolo
O'Shea
They soon reach the cobbled climbs, with Allonca taking maximum points at the top of both. No-one gets close to the 88 points racked up by teammate Ferreira though, and as a result he is confirmed as the winner of the king of the mountains competition.
The peloton roll up the cobbled climbs 4 minutes behind, and everyone gets over them with the pace still being low.
The chase soon begins though, with TomTom taking control of the peloton and increasing the tempo on the front of the bunch. With 60 kilometres left of the stage the gap sits at just under the 4 minute mark.
That pressure, combined with the high crosswinds today create havoc in the peloton, with riders being dropped off the back left, right and centre. A huge group of dropped riders is formed behind the peloton, with it's numbers increasing with every kilometre. Plenty of big names are inside, including:
Ahlstrand
Cavendish
Avelino
Krieger
Vanoverschelde
Van Heerden
Lagab
Von Hoff
Demare
Daniel
Vingerling
Veelers
Many riders high up in the GC also distanced as well.
Breschel
Boom
De Haes
Geschke
Visconti
Nardin
Nuyens
Afewerki
De Vreese
Grashev
Steurs
Schlechter
Back at the front, Maes and Summerhill decide to try and take advantage of the chaos by attacking with 25 kilometres to go!
The pair soon make the junction to the leaders on the finishing circuit, with Coronel moving to the front to try and maintain the 45 second gap this group has. Maybe a pre-planned tactical move from Azteca? Summerhill is only 32 seconds down on the GC lead so is a real threat if he stays away for much longer.
The chase group, with just 18 riders left due to the severity of the crosswinds, is led by Aegon who are slowly reducing the deficit. The 9 riders off the front, minus Feiereisen and Hadi who have been dropped, have 8 kilometres to hold onto their slim advantage.
5 kilometres later the gap is just holding at 20 seconds. The sprint opens up amongst the leaders, and Summerhill is clearly the strongest, quickly pulling out a huge advantage!
Trentin also goes early to try and close the gap to Summerhill and the group behind the American, which is currently posing a threat to his GC lead. Stallaert, Boonen and Haussler are also near the front of this group.
Into the final kilometre Summerhill, still holds the lead, but the gaps are closing up behind him. Formolo is his closest challenger with Hofland also near the front.
Most importantly, the chasing group containing Trentin has made it to the back wheels of the front group, meaning there won't be any gaps today at the finish! Boonen is moving past the tired breakaway riders quickly and could find himself in podium contention at this rate.
It's Summerhill who wins today though! The American put in a well-timed attack today and deserves his victory. It isn't enough to win the GC, but the bonus seconds will lift him into 2nd overall.
Formolo hangs on to take a surprise 2nd today for AMEX, with Boonen managing to finish on the podium again today to cement a 3rd place in the GC.
Also in the top 5 today are O'Shea and Hofland after their day on the attack.
All 26 riders from the chase/lead groups finish on the same time. The huge group of 157 riders dropped in the crosswinds finished together as well, + 5'37" on the winner.
That all means that the winner of the 2015 5 Jours de Dunkerque is Trentin! The Italian lead the race since his first-day win and takes a deserved race victory here despite a small scare today.
Haussler wins the points competition after a win on stage 2, and another stage winner Ferreira takes the mountains classification. Stallaert is the best young rider, with Gazelle being the best team here.
