Stage 3 of the race is a flat day, much like yesterday. Today's stage once again has plenty of climbing and will not be straightforward for the pure sprinters, but the favourites remain the fastmen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Avelino all should be in contention in a mass sprint.

Five men form the break today, on a day where the mountains competition should be decided with no less than 10 sprints:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Scheit (3rd KotM)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Egger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Flens
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Sulimov

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/3c095183-009a-4934-a3b2-24a82dd013b9.png

After being in yesterday's break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Scheit started the day with a 20 point advantage in the mountains competition. However, he is overhauled by the impressive pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira who wins 6 of the first 8 sprints, moving him into the lead in the competition with 2 sprints left today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/67c002ac-72e6-44e3-addc-895c08a0617d.png

Risa are the team controlling the gap today for race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Trentin. The gap with 30 kilometres to go sits at just over 2 minutes, and no sprinters have been dropped on the hills.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/5f7c880f-e0de-4265-b9e8-b4aab6aa9799.png

On the penultimate climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira attacked away from the rest of the break to claim maximum points, before continuing over and increasing the gap. He crests the final climb alone, with a 30 second gap back to the rest of the break. As a result he takes the lead in the mountains competition.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/49004a08-beca-4bb2-825a-52d4cd49f60e.png

After the climb the sprinters' teams move to the front to set a high tempo, which catches the break - except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira. The Portuguese is riding well and has 1'10" over the bunch with just 12 kilometres to go. TomTom and Eddie Stobart will have to chase hard to make sure their leaders have a chance of the win today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/10948d48-d81b-4fcb-b85c-aaba1bc9f91f.png

With just 5 kilometres remaining, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira still has a gap of 40" over the peloton. Could he stay away?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/e07db5a5-a8a8-42bd-89f7-a3c174e318b1.png

Back in the peloton, we see more attacks from the classics men just like yesterday! This time it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill who go off in pursuit of the lone leader.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/acb32276-85e2-4ee2-b474-4a89e8104a28.png

Behind them Eddie Stobart try to remain calm as more attacks come, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Opie pulling on the front with teammate Cavendish on the back of their train. Yesterday's winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Haussler is well-positioned, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Stallaert.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/cf9a76de-8201-491f-be86-276497229a09.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira remains alone at the front of the race and can now see the flammage rouge. His gap is now just 25 seconds!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/287d0d7b-e6f8-4475-9de8-fc2da87a2f81.png

As the Portuguese enters the final kilometre, the sprint has started behind, catching pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill.

The Manx Missile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Cavendish has been launched by his sprint train, and is leading alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Stallaert. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Haussler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Vantomme are just behind.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/18b15404-8241-4d5f-8d4b-1cc4b64f3aab.png

The sprinters are denied today though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Ferreira takes a huge win today. Not only that but the Portuguese takes the lead in the mountains competition. A great day on the attack for him.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/27ba0c76-ff67-4fc0-ac51-f057c0ad83f3.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Cavendish is leading the charge behind and has a gap over the rest of the sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Haussler has moved up behind him into second position in the sprint, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Farrar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen also making moves forward.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/e9aa2fcb-d565-4d7c-9aae-4e560dc7383d.png

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Cavendish who takes an easy second today. Unfortunately for him it's on the day an attacker survived.

The other rider on the podium today is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen, who is a distant 3rd.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/3e6b94ad-80ae-4527-a9fa-7e98544be954.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Vantomme is 4th, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Farrar just edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Haussler for the final top-5 place.

Also in the top 10 today are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Hofland and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Breschel who finish in that order.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/915c41b5-d114-403f-9375-ea6d37af2c19.png

No changes in the GC apart from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen moving up to 7th with his 8 bonus seconds today.

One DNF today - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Corti.
