Welcome to stage 1 of the 5 Jours de Dunkerque 2015, undoubtedly the queen stage of the race which could decide the GC already with 4 flat days to come. The big stage favourites are Summerhill, Vanspeybrouck and Baugnies.
After a few attempts a breakaway is formed. Surprisingly one of the best cobblers in the race is let go with Albert in the group.
Ford
Kneisky
Albert
Eichler
As the group reaches the first cobbled climb of the day, the gap is at 6 minutes back to the peloton. It's clear Albert and Eichler are much stronger on the cobbles than the other attackers, as those two ride away on the climb.
Those two increase their gap and therefore contest the three mountain sprints today. Eichler wins 2 of them and therefore takes the lead in the competition with 21 points to Albert's 19 points.
Back in the peloton, the chase has started to pick up with Swedbank, RBC and Gazelle all contributing. However, with Albert riding a high tempo the gap is at 3'30" with just 40 kilometres left.
On the next climb Albert really picks up the pace and drops Eichler. He has 2'30" to defend with around 30 kilometres left.
As this happens there is news of a big group being dropped off the back of the peloton, and there are some favourites involved!
Maes
Verbist
Daniel
Declerq
Thomas
Are all in this group and it looks like it's game over for them today with the gap only increasing.
A lap later more big names are dropped on on the cobbled climb. The big news is than last year's winner Lagab has cracked! A big blow to his hopes of defending his title.
Promotion hopefuls Aegon's leader Vanmarcke is also dropped, not good news for them either.
Back to the front of the race, there's just 10 kilometres left for the main favourites group. Just 21 riders remain, with a few riders pushing to rejoin this group after being dropped. All the big favourites remain apart from those mentioned to have been dropped.
Albert is the only rider left in front, with a 40 second gap to this group!
The Belgian manages to hold the gap at 30 seconds over the next five kilometres but is tiring, can he hold on?
No. Albert is caught with just 3 kilometres left. With no attacks coming, it looks like it will be a sprint between the 25 riders in this group.
Except the cobbled climb seems to be tough to sprint on, with all riders riding up at their own tempo. Trentin moves into the lead, with Visconti behind him.
Summerhill, Vanspeybrouck and Baugnies are all towards the back of the group and have plenty of ground to make up on the leading riders.
Into the final kilometre Trentin has pulled out a lead on the rest of the riders! Pozzato is giving chase, with Visconti beginning to fade in third.
Summerhill is moving through the group at a speed after finding a way to the front, and could yet reach the podium.
It's Trentin who takes the stage though, and with it the GC lead! The Italian benefited from being well-placed at the bottom of the climb and crucially manages to gap the rest of the group, which gives him valuable extra seconds in the GC.
Pozzato is second today and Summerhill is third. The Azteca rider will rue not being well-positioned at the bottom as he was the strongest rider on the climb. They finish 8 seconds behind Trentin.
19 seconds down on the winner Visconti leads home the main group. A good and unexpected finish for the Oz Cycling man, who is gaining some good results at PCT level for his team this season. Haussler rounds off the top 5.
Favourites Vanspeybrouck is 8th, and Baugnies is 15th. Both will be disappointed at not gaining any time today.
Some favourites had an even worse day, after being dropped earlier on.
+ 1'37" for defending champion Lagab.
+ 3'51" for Vanmarcke.
+ 5'07" for Maes, Daniel and Thomas.
A bad day for all of these riders and their teams, who will have to look to try and salvage their races from this point on.
