Welcome to stage 1 of the 5 Jours de Dunkerque 2015, undoubtedly the queen stage of the race which could decide the GC already with 4 flat days to come. The big stage favourites are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies.

After a few attempts a breakaway is formed. Surprisingly one of the best cobblers in the race is let go with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Eichler

As the group reaches the first cobbled climb of the day, the gap is at 6 minutes back to the peloton. It's clear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Eichler are much stronger on the cobbles than the other attackers, as those two ride away on the climb.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/a23dabc0-9b8f-497b-8191-a40dfb4faf2c.png

Those two increase their gap and therefore contest the three mountain sprints today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Eichler wins 2 of them and therefore takes the lead in the competition with 21 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert's 19 points.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/41e71a83-9665-4b6c-b967-edad2e1dfb9d.png

Back in the peloton, the chase has started to pick up with Swedbank, RBC and Gazelle all contributing. However, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert riding a high tempo the gap is at 3'30" with just 40 kilometres left.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/6be2468c-4a2c-4bd1-8da7-efb232310706.png

On the next climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert really picks up the pace and drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Eichler. He has 2'30" to defend with around 30 kilometres left.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/7dcc03ac-4f10-4fba-aaad-6fd84f53c0d0.png

As this happens there is news of a big group being dropped off the back of the peloton, and there are some favourites involved!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Verbist
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Daniel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Declerq
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Thomas

Are all in this group and it looks like it's game over for them today with the gap only increasing.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/37cffbdc-5275-4003-baaf-b65cc6d91e5e.png

A lap later more big names are dropped on on the cobbled climb. The big news is than last year's winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Lagab has cracked! A big blow to his hopes of defending his title.

Promotion hopefuls Aegon's leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke is also dropped, not good news for them either.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/bdd6d23a-ff7b-4048-a680-7cb6b101f019.png

Back to the front of the race, there's just 10 kilometres left for the main favourites group. Just 21 riders remain, with a few riders pushing to rejoin this group after being dropped. All the big favourites remain apart from those mentioned to have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert is the only rider left in front, with a 40 second gap to this group!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/5a7a3b97-e5cf-4a84-9a64-58ec9545d4cf.png

The Belgian manages to hold the gap at 30 seconds over the next five kilometres but is tiring, can he hold on?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/debf6afb-ba92-433c-8c16-03cc4c562be9.png

No. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert is caught with just 3 kilometres left. With no attacks coming, it looks like it will be a sprint between the 25 riders in this group.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/d516cec1-7c76-4b22-ba2a-246f882c17aa.png

Except the cobbled climb seems to be tough to sprint on, with all riders riding up at their own tempo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Trentin moves into the lead, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies are all towards the back of the group and have plenty of ground to make up on the leading riders.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/94a63537-884e-45ad-9d0d-2ea5c8542c93.png

Into the final kilometre pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Trentin has pulled out a lead on the rest of the riders! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Pozzato is giving chase, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti beginning to fade in third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill is moving through the group at a speed after finding a way to the front, and could yet reach the podium.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/ec28f3aa-29c5-4fa1-b7b4-ad6558010f8a.png

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Trentin who takes the stage though, and with it the GC lead! The Italian benefited from being well-placed at the bottom of the climb and crucially manages to gap the rest of the group, which gives him valuable extra seconds in the GC.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/d9920517-7239-407a-9020-7b60c5b056af.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Pozzato is second today and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill is third. The Azteca rider will rue not being well-positioned at the bottom as he was the strongest rider on the climb. They finish 8 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Trentin.

19 seconds down on the winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti leads home the main group. A good and unexpected finish for the Oz Cycling man, who is gaining some good results at PCT level for his team this season. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Haussler rounds off the top 5.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/030f5ce2-20eb-44dc-83aa-1b05b190b3fd.png

Favourites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck is 8th, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies is 15th. Both will be disappointed at not gaining any time today.

Some favourites had an even worse day, after being dropped earlier on.

+ 1'37" for defending champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Lagab.

+ 3'51" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke.

+ 5'07" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Daniel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Thomas.

A bad day for all of these riders and their teams, who will have to look to try and salvage their races from this point on.
