Tour d'Azerbaijan - Stage 3
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/Stage3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-1.jpg
Action right from the start!

Quality climbers attacked right from the start. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Samoilev (@ 1'25) was the chief architect of the early 10 man break which also included: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Finetto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Wu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Moreno Hernandez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fwt.png Ndbri.

However, only the Belarussian was doing the pace setting. As yesterday no team wanting or willing to help out the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png DeLaval - Kiitokori team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Alpina - Avianca, with their lesser domestiques, really struggled to bring back the strong early break: which was their goal.

However, with 60 KM to go thanks to help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Indosat - ANZ & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Fablok - Dunlop the early break is done for and the peloton leads the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-3.jpg

Shortly afterwards pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Walker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Barbas & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Choe attack out of the peloton....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-4.jpg

.... with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe (@ 2'27) & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kamzong not too far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-5.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe would continue on. The mountains his prerogative! He would drop the rest of the break, take the 10 KOM points on offer with 40 KM to go, the race situation being this at the top of the 2nd cat. climb:

- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe

-pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kamzong @ '47

- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Choe & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Kasa @ 1'25

- Peloton @ 2'12

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-6.jpg
The penultimate climb!

We hit the wall of a 4.5 KM climb with 27 KM to go, such is the difficulty of it that the race could be won and lost here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe has a slender advantage of only '40 over the peloton as two riders attack they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Mate & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sivori when one of the most spectacular pieces of riding you are likely to see comes to the fore....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-7.jpg
Alpina - Avianca Away!

.... pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Alpina - Avianca destroy the peloton and send three riders up the road at the same time, including the yellow jersey! Having sat in the peloton all stage so far the moment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy & Weber hit the front, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco, in their wheel no one else could follow.

Love them or hate them what a piece of riding!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot (@ 1'25) spots this danger and attacks across, behind him a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png DeLaval - Kiitokori rider makes a move surely a Colombian? No, The rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen (@ 1'25).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-9.jpg

The rest of the favourites can only watch on, they don't have it in the legs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero sets pace on the peloton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sivori, the dropped breakaway rider, just up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-11.jpg

Despite all the action behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe holds on to his small advantage and crests the penultimate climb with 22 KM first, 16 more KOM points for him.

@ '32 come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen (12 KOM points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot (10 points) followed, in order, by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Weber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Mate rounding out the group.

@ 1'45 comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sivori in no mans' land.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-12.jpg

@ 2'11 comes the rest of the big names, totalling 47 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona etc. They all look spent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-13.jpg
13 KM to go: the final climb

We hit the final climb with some changes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot lead the rest of the yellow jersey group and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe by '22. Believe it or not the gap to the peloton has eked out to 3'00.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Mate dropped with 10 KM to go. The gap to those ahead soon increases to '45 on the unforgiving final climb. One less teammate for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco then, who did look the weakest of the group over the top of the previous climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-15.jpg

Attacks from the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko attack out of the peloton with less than 10 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-16.jpg

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Feillu not too far behind them ( seen here passing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sivori). The Frenchman would join up with the three attackers and start to make inroads into those ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-17.jpg

Despite being well dropped from the lead group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Mate manage to make it back with under 3 KM to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-18.jpg

With little over 1 KM to the finish the lead group of 7 has 2'00 over the chasers and will contest the stage and the GC. It is looking good for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco keeping the GC.

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Feillu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko are charging up the mountain. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini has been well dropped but still ahead of the ever-fracturing peloton which is now over 4'00 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-19.jpg
1 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco goes bang as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen puts in a massive final attack. The Colombian really starts to ship time and has really cracked, but surely he won't finish over 1'00 behind the Dane and lose the race lead?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-20.jpg

After finishing looking after the GC leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Weber is easily finishing the fastest here. He swiftly catches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot with the Dane is his sights.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-21.jpg

Victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen! It may not be the rider from the Finnish team you expected to win but there it is! He takes the win and time bonuses after a truly epic stage, 2nd place, at least is his. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Weber caught up to the Dane but couldn't pass him, still a fantastic result that will vault him up the GC.

Hardly dirt teams! Super rides from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot (3rd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe (4th) won't be forgotten in a hurry. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Roe's ride in particular was nothing short of amazing, he leaves with the KOM jersey.

What about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-22.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco keeps the GC lead.

Into the final stage goes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco in the GC lead! Finishing @ '40 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Mate he does enough to keep the yellow jersey by '25 over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Feillu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko really did eat into the lead of those ahead. They finish together @ just over 1'00 and will both finish in the top 7.

They distanced pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus
towards the finish, but he will leave with the white jersey and fifth place after a massive race for him.

Hit and miss rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini is the next home @ 2'57.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-24.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sivori

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/san.png Sivori comes home in almost 4'00 down. A top 15 on the stage and on GC for him.

Having been ahead of the peloton, marginally, for most of the final climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero comes home well down at 4'30 will relinquish his jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az3-25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Generali - Kronenbourg 1664 round out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona's terrible day by having two of their riders beat him at the finish. An off day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona who was shepherded home by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Samoilev and settles for 12th in GC.

Everyone finished the stage and, read the report again, if it surprises you that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Alpina - Avianca lead the team classification comfortably.
