Action right from the start!
Quality climbers attacked right from the start. Samoilev (@ 1'25) was the chief architect of the early 10 man break which also included: Finetto, Wu, Moreno Hernandez and Ndbri.
However, only the Belarussian was doing the pace setting. As yesterday no team wanting or willing to help out the DeLaval - Kiitokori team.
Alpina - Avianca, with their lesser domestiques, really struggled to bring back the strong early break: which was their goal.
However, with 60 KM to go thanks to help from Indosat - ANZ & Fablok - Dunlop the early break is done for and the peloton leads the race.
Shortly afterwards Walker, Barbas & Choe attack out of the peloton....
.... with Roe (@ 2'27) & Kamzong not too far behind.
And Roe would continue on. The mountains his prerogative! He would drop the rest of the break, take the 10 KOM points on offer with 40 KM to go, the race situation being this at the top of the 2nd cat. climb:
- Roe
- Kamzong @ '47
- Choe & Kasa @ 1'25
- Peloton @ 2'12
The penultimate climb!
We hit the wall of a 4.5 KM climb with 27 KM to go, such is the difficulty of it that the race could be won and lost here. Roe has a slender advantage of only '40 over the peloton as two riders attack they are Mate & Sivori when one of the most spectacular pieces of riding you are likely to see comes to the fore....
Alpina - Avianca Away!
.... Alpina - Avianca destroy the peloton and send three riders up the road at the same time, including the yellow jersey! Having sat in the peloton all stage so far the moment Godoy & Weber hit the front, with Orozco, in their wheel no one else could follow.
Love them or hate them what a piece of riding!
Bagot (@ 1'25) spots this danger and attacks across, behind him a DeLaval - Kiitokori rider makes a move surely a Colombian? No, The rider is Sørensen (@ 1'25).
The rest of the favourites can only watch on, they don't have it in the legs. Ochoa Quintero sets pace on the peloton with Sivori, the dropped breakaway rider, just up the road.
Despite all the action behind Roe holds on to his small advantage and crests the penultimate climb with 22 KM first, 16 more KOM points for him.
@ '32 come Sørensen (12 KOM points), Bagot (10 points) followed, in order, by Weber, Godoy & Orozco. With Mate rounding out the group.
@ 1'45 comes Sivori in no mans' land.
@ 2'11 comes the rest of the big names, totalling 47 riders. Signorini, Anacona etc. They all look spent.
13 KM to go: the final climb
We hit the final climb with some changes. Sørensen and Bagot lead the rest of the yellow jersey group and Roe by '22. Believe it or not the gap to the peloton has eked out to 3'00.
Godoy and Mate dropped with 10 KM to go. The gap to those ahead soon increases to '45 on the unforgiving final climb. One less teammate for Orozco then, who did look the weakest of the group over the top of the previous climb.
Attacks from the peloton. Kudus, Signorini and Dyachenko attack out of the peloton with less than 10 KM to go.
With Feillu not too far behind them ( seen here passing Sivori). The Frenchman would join up with the three attackers and start to make inroads into those ahead.
Despite being well dropped from the lead group Godoy and Mate manage to make it back with under 3 KM to the finish.
With little over 1 KM to the finish the lead group of 7 has 2'00 over the chasers and will contest the stage and the GC. It is looking good for Orozco keeping the GC.
Behind Feillu, Kudus and Dyachenko are charging up the mountain. Signorini has been well dropped but still ahead of the ever-fracturing peloton which is now over 4'00 behind the leaders.
1 KM to go.
Orozco goes bang as Sørensen puts in a massive final attack. The Colombian really starts to ship time and has really cracked, but surely he won't finish over 1'00 behind the Dane and lose the race lead?
After finishing looking after the GC leader, Weber is easily finishing the fastest here. He swiftly catches Roe and Bagot with the Dane is his sights.
Victory for Sørensen! It may not be the rider from the Finnish team you expected to win but there it is! He takes the win and time bonuses after a truly epic stage, 2nd place, at least is his. Weber caught up to the Dane but couldn't pass him, still a fantastic result that will vault him up the GC.
Hardly dirt teams! Super rides from Bagot (3rd) and Roe (4th) won't be forgotten in a hurry. Roe's ride in particular was nothing short of amazing, he leaves with the KOM jersey.
What about Orozco?
Orozco keeps the GC lead.
Into the final stage goes Orozco in the GC lead! Finishing @ '40 with Godoy and Mate he does enough to keep the yellow jersey by '25 over Sørensen.
Feillu and Dyachenko really did eat into the lead of those ahead. They finish together @ just over 1'00 and will both finish in the top 7.
They distanced Kudus
towards the finish, but he will leave with the white jersey and fifth place after a massive race for him.
Hit and miss rider Signorini is the next home @ 2'57.
Sivori
Sivori comes home in almost 4'00 down. A top 15 on the stage and on GC for him.
Having been ahead of the peloton, marginally, for most of the final climb Ochoa Quintero comes home well down at 4'30 will relinquish his jersey.
Generali - Kronenbourg 1664 round out Anacona's terrible day by having two of their riders beat him at the finish. An off day for Anacona who was shepherded home by Samoilev and settles for 12th in GC.
Everyone finished the stage and, read the report again, if it surprises you that Alpina - Avianca lead the team classification comfortably.
