Tour d'Azerbaijan - Stage 2
The Rider
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/Stage2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-1.jpg
Carnage early on!

With the hard terrain still to come it is the wind that causes havoc on the flat sections in the early part of the race. With 130 KM to go there are groups everywhere as the peloton is down to 80 riders, notable riders dropped: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Poorseyedi & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Wang.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-2.jpg

However, when the road starts to kick up we are all back together. It is then that an 8 man break gets away:

- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aks.png Andersson
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Bøchman
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Gallopin
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Molard
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Rocchetti
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Rubiano Chavez
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Walker

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Gallopin would take the 1st KOM points on offer, from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Molard. Despite being good quality riders this stage was taking no prisoners: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aks.png Andersson & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Bøchman were dropped from the break for good with 95 KM to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-4.jpg

With 84 KM to go the break are well in check at 6'45. Surprisingly, as they don't really have a rider for this stage, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Severstal-Mercator are doing most of the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Molard moves into the joint KOM lead (10 points) with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Gallopin as he summits the climb first with 65 KM to go. However, that is all for nothing if they can't hold on until the final climb which offers 16 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-6.jpg
Team Kenya Airways set the race alight!

We are still 47 KM to the finish with the break at 3'10, on the penultimate climb, when the favourites strike out! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus attacks and he is followed by some big cheese:

- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot
- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kamzong

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-7.jpg

After some effort these aforementioned attackers would be joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Brandt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Girardi. Such is the impetus of the favourites that they catch up to the original break at the peak of the unclassified penultimate climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Feillu would be the next to try and bridge the gap .....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini would make it across but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Feillu wouldn't. With 33 KM to go we hit the bottom of the final 10 KM climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona, as the big favourite, is being forced to do all of the pace setting.

The race at the bottom of the final climb:

13 man lead group, includes:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus.

- @ 48 (1):

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak

- @ 1'10 (13), includes:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Girardi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Feillu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Brandt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kamzong, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Nieve & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Kasa

- @ 1'45 (44), includes rest of favourites, such as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Samoilev & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Weber.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak would ride across to the lead group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot is the only one contributing with the race favourite at the pace setting on the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-10.jpg
5 KM to go on the climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona really starts to up the pace now. One by one riders drop off, decimating the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-11.jpg

With 3 KM to go on the climb the lead group is down to 6 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot was the last rider to have been dropped, ironically as being the only other rider to have set the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-12.jpg

But the destruction continues! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona continues his onslaught! With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko dropped the lead group is down to four riders with 1.5 KM to go on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-13.jpg

It is not all about the lead group though. Some riders who started the climb 1'45 back and making big inroads into the dropped riders above. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Weber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Nieve & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Finetto are seen here in the third group on the road as the top of the climb nears.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-14.jpg
Four riders summit the final climb together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero (16 points) is the first over the top of the final climb and will be in polka dots tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco (12 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus (10 points) & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona (8 points) came over the top with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona knocked off the pace a few hundred meters before the very top of the climb, realising he wasn't going to drop the others today.

There are 23 KM of descending and flat roads to the finish, interesting as all four are terrible at going downhill!

They have decent gaps to the rest of the field though:

@ '53 - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cpl.png Dyachenko & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot

@ '1'24 - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Nieve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Weber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Finetto.

With a larger group @ around 2'20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-15.jpg

On the descent there are some changes. Notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Nieve bridges across to group 2. Some riders further behind group 3 would descend well and join up: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Samoilev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sørensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Løvik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-16.jpg

The four man group survive with their advantage to the rest behind intact at the final kilometre. None of the riders have a sprint worth salt, so who will win this one? First across the line takes yellow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco is the first to launch and immediately gets a gap inside the final kilometre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-18.jpg
Win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Orozco!

The pure Colombian climber takes the win and the yellow jersey, too strong for the rest in the sprint there. A very unlikely winner today as he is unpredictable at the best of times. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus, who really animated the race, round out the podium ahead of a, perhaps sour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Anacona.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/Azerbaijan/az2-19.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot comes home.

The next group came home at @ '56 with the third group coming home @ 1'05. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Godoy, 16th, leading home a 27 man group at 2'07 this race and GC are both far from being decided with every jersey still, well and truly, up for grabs.
