While I was riding through Istanbul, I found a nice 5.1 kilometer segment which is full-flat, nearly without any corners. I was 15th in the segment ranking over 67 competitors.
Planning to make a KOM but don't know how to maximize my effort. And for energy, when to eat an energy bar to maximise my effort on the 5 kilometer?!
Spoiler
I have recently bought clip-on aero bars.
I have clip-on cycling shoes.

If its pan-flat, the wind is your biggest enemy. Be Aero and look for a tailwind day. Energy gels on a 5km "sprint" won't help. Just be faster. Try with and without Aero bars. Look what fits you best. I love Aero-bars, but my dad f.e. hates them. He can't put power out on them. Just ride a steady pace, and if you can, sprint the last 100-200m.
The thing with Strava segments over flat/slightly lumpy terrain is that most of the top couple on well used segments have gotten the KOM thanks to riding in bunches which gives you a massive advantage, the main place real KOM's come along is once the road tilts upwards

Be warmed up, be fresh, go hard (almost flat out for what will be just a few minutes), be aero (low on those aero bars and elbows in), (as above) hope that no-one has targeted the segment on a group ride!
If you want additional assistance check the wind and do it with a raging tailwind.
I smashed a flattish KOM with over 6000 riders on it largely thanks to a raging tailwind that happened to be blowing (I was in good shape and going for it but still) - even got initially flagged for it but the time was genuine it just benefited from a whopping 40km/h tailwind
Strava = just a bit of fun so anything goes within reason
I may have a leadout guy with me (my dad). That would help me a bit.
