First of two mountain stages, so definitely a key stage for those aiming for the GC: the 'Cameron Highlands' don't feature a tough summit finish like the 'Genting', but the second half of this stage is all uphill (with a flat finish then).
Atapuma and Gilanipoor as the clear favorites, who both will try to avoid a breakaway win in this important stage.
A group of 7 riders is allowed to break clear from the pack early into the stage and we have some faces seen in breakaways here before:
Alafaci (tied 1st in KoM, 16pts)
Bissinger (5th in KOM, 6pts)
Stoltz
Foliforov
Fankhauser
Bravo
Stoltz
Fankhauser (two) and Alifaci would take the the sprints, while Alafaci jumps into the provisional KoM-lead by taking today's first Cat3 mountain sprint.
The most notable move so far happens about 45km before finish though:
Hirt attacks the bunch (68 riders left) on today's longest ascend up the Cameron Highlands. He will quickly bridge across the early break, which advantage is melting down now.
The young gun caught up to the leading group right in time to take the Cat1-climb: the peloton, however, would keep pacing (with Atapuma actually trying to jump behind Hirt on first hand, but failing) and so it's a pretty narrow lead for Hirt.
On the following descend (19km remaining), the early break is swallowed by a reduced bunch (28 riders), as we see 4 more riders bridging across solo-leader Hirt now:
Gilanipoor/Lowe, Atapuma and Soler!
Definitely a group with the big guns - establishing a 40"-gap with now 14km and one final ascend to go!
A few more GC-contenders now try to jump across this strong leading group:
Rienda Segura
Canecky
Schwab
Sinelobov
Berard
Rudaskov
Baz
Koep
Dabrowski
So we do see most of the promising GC-riders on the move now!
Hirt takes the last mountain sprint then (HC rated), so he's taking the lead there:
KoM Hirt 36, Alafaci 26, Gilanippor 20
And his leading group is going strong, holding the latest attackers off easily:
Group Atapuma/Gilanipoor/Hirt leading by 52" on now solo-chasing Rienda Segura with 7km left!
Further 43" in arrears, the peloton (23 riders), as most of the attacks were empty-handed so far..
Less than 3km remaining and that's one drama in the front group now!
Atapuma went down with a crash in a tricky corner! That's truly bad luck and he is going to lose valuable time on group Gilanipoor that way.. he also sees Riende Segura going past him and will drop back to the chasing bunch eventually..
Of course the leading group wouldn't wait with the finish so close ahead: Hirt kicking off the sprint ahead of Gilanipoor and Soler..
Gilanipoor takes line honours ahead of Soler, Hirt and Lowe!
A great stage for all of those four, while Gilanipoor obviously had the best end today, grabbing valuable bonifications.
+ 1'15" for Rienda Segura, who struggled to maintain his gap on the bunch, that eventually finishes with the same time then.
Top-favorite Atapuma comes in as 23rd inside this group. Horrible moment to go down, but of course he ain't out of the GC-fight that way. Let's just hope he ain't hurt.
No real GC-contenders being dropped today, most notable maybe:
+ 5'54" Lozano
+ 7'58" for last year's runner-up Masuda
Gilanipoor slipping into yellow, by just 8" on Soler, 12" on Hirt and 20" on Lowe.. all other remaining contenders 1'35" behind now. With the queen stage still to come, there's plenty of room for significant changes. But of course that's a first sign of strength from Compal's duo Gilanipoor/Lowe!
