The 17th stage has a lot to offer for the GC tension. 3 climbs on the way towards Alpe d'Huez. Yes, you read correct. It`s the famous d'Huez climb in this years Giro d'Italia. And it`s one of the toughest stages of all with a length of 210km and lots of climbing.
Ricco has less than 2min left of his advantage. Schleck and also Madrazo are coming closer and the long mountains suit these two much more. The gap to the 4th, Cunego is already at 6min.

We almost reach the steeper part of the HC category and the peloton still not allowing the attackers a bigger gap. Not too surprising as those fight for a top15-20 in the GC:

All but Roux, who clearly was the weakest climber make it and improve their gap to more than 5min on the top. Novikov meanwhile has abandoned the race after some health problems.

It was the same problem as on previous stages. Festina tried to control the gap. But alone and with their non climbing squad, they just couldn`t make it. So it is not surprising that the break might take it. The duo never made it to them and those six might be the lucky riders going into the final climb with a gap of 9min. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png

Cunego. And they do so before the climb even starts. This puts a lot of pressure on Ricco obviously as he is almost isolated already.

Ãšran see this Festina dilemma and follow as well.
Campero and Koretzky still in the peloton for Ricco. But both look quite exhausted already.

In the break Kohl is the strongest it seems and he is going for the 12km solo. Can he keep the 30s gap to the others all way up?

Great news for Festina. ONCE is joining the work as Anton is back again as only of the recent attackers and with Brajkovic fighting for the top5 here, they have a great option as well.

Schleck and Cunego though keep going strong and are almost joined by Madrazo. The gap to the next then seems to become bigger. Ricco in huge danger to lose the jersey today.

Uran also a bit ahead of the next with a trio coming close behind him including the Maglia Rosa of Ricco. Huge selection now.

A bit later Madrazo is able to join the GC duo. The break though still a lot further up already.

4,6km left for Ricco. And the gap to the Schleck group is at 1'26. He can`t allow him a lot more as most of his advantage is gone. He is going into the lead now making Guldhammer struggle it seems. Also Uran got dropped by them. He clearly overpowered when following Madrazo.

Next to the GC fight, it`s also a stage decision. Kohl indeed wins todays stage after a long solo. In the end though Faiers really came close again for 2nd.
Kolesnikov and Topchanyuk as next within 1min. All others are caught by Schleck then.

So the Vesuvio rider takes 5th today in a sprint against Cunego, who makes a huge step as well. Madrazo couldn`t response to this late acceleration and is losing a couple of seconds.

Ricco comes in as 9th just behind Hirschlein. His gap to Schleck? 1'01! So he even gained time on Schleck in the end. This is a strong performance by Ricco and shows his fighting spirit.

Brajkovic lost 25s to him in the end, while Guldhammer dropped into the next group including Velits, Denifl. They finish another half a minute behind Brajkovic.

Uran had no energy left in the end losing another 30s but still ahead of Pozzovivo and Nibali, who must be disappointed with this stage. Pinot, Anton etc. also not really having their best day.

Last but not least a lot of "DNF" today as it was expected on this stage as some finished 90min behind the winner. Check the bottom of the results for the full list. Most notable names are sprinters Guardini, Van Poppel or time trialists Kittel, Durbridge, Yatsevich.
